News18 Assam/NE launched

A new satellite news channel targeting the audience of 60 million people in northeast India emerged from the pre-historic city of Guwahati to join in the battle for electronic media space. The News18 Assam/NE, owned ETV News Network, was officially launched by Assam chief minister Sarbananda Sonowal in a glittering function held on 24 June 2016 at a deluxe hotel.

The launching ceremony was also graced by Union petroleum & natural gas minister Dharmendra Pradhan, Union drinking water & sanitation minister Ramkripal Yadav, Union tourism & culture minister Mahesh Sharma, State industry & commerce minister Chandra Mohan Patowary, State finance, education & health minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, News 18 channel head Jagadish Chandra with many other distinguished guests.

“The Press being the fourth pillar of democracy has to remain as a watchdog and be sensitive to what’s happening around,” said Sonowal in his speech adding that the media should project the human values in proper perspectives and dig-out the truth.

Arguing that the media must carry all sections of people, irrespective of their caste, creed or religion to strengthen the edifice of democracy, the young chief minister argued that their voices must be heard loud and clear. He also called upon the media fraternity to remain vigilant always to closely monitor the functioning of the government.

The alienated region of India, borders Nepal, Bhutan, Tibet (China), Myanmar and Bangladesh now supports six free-to-air satellite news channels (NewsLive, DY365, PratidinTime, PragNews, AssamTalks and News 18 Assam/Northeast) with a number of cable news channels. Most of the news channels beam news & news related contents in Assamese with few in other languages including English, Hindi, Bengali etc.

Book on urbanization released at press club

An English book on urbanization, authored by Dr Brajendra Saikia, was released on Tuesday at Guwahati Press Club. Published by EBH Publications (India), the book titled Urbanization, Urban Sprawl and the Periphery is based on various studies dealing with the socio-economic implications of urbanization in Assam. Jeevan Study reveals daily lifestyle of youth

Volunteers’ association Jeevan Initiative has conducted a study based on a survey among the youths studying in various colleges and universities in Guwahati regarding their daily lifestyle. Interesting facts have emerged out of its findings mostly about their social media behavior. The study findings have been made public today. 30% male and 24% female in the city go to their bed after 12 midnight. Among them 8-9% go to bed after 2 am. The survey has found that 40-41% youth surf social networking sites just before going to bed. 66% female and 35% male has a habit of afternoon nap. Hepatitis-B camp at press club

The second dose of Hepatitis-B vaccine, who took the first dose of vaccine at Guwahati Press Club last month, will be administered tomorrow (7 May 2016) at the same venue. The vaccination camp, organized by the city based Dispur Hospitals, will start at 11 am and conclude by 1 pm. The Asian Forum for Human Rights and Development (FORUM-ASIA) strongly condemns the excessive use of force by police which has led to the death of two protestors in Tawang, Arunachal Pradesh in the north-eastern state of India on 2 May 2016. Assam lost a senior journalist

Senior journalist of northeast India and a member of Guwahati Press Club, Naba Sarma (79) passed away on 3 May 2016. Sarma, who worked both in regional and national media outlets, breathed his last at Gauhati Medical College Hospital on Tuesday morning after a massive heart attack. He left behind his wife Anima Sarma, only daughter Karishma Sarma and a granddaughter. A resident of Guwahati, Sarma hailed from Dibrugarh of eastern Assam.
