The mortal remains of Anjan Dutta were consigned to flames on Friday a day after the APCC president died of cardiac arrest in New Delhi. After last respect to the lifeless former minister in Guwahati and Sivasagar, Dutta’s body was taken to Gaurisagar where he was cremated with full state honour in the afternoon. Former Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi and forest minister Pramila Rani Brahma, MP Ripun Bora were prominent among those who were present at the cremation ground. Before that thousands of bereaved Congress men received Dutta’s body at the Jorhat Airport in the morning and was taken to Sivasagar to facilitate his fans to pay their last respect in Sivasagar town and his birth place Gayan gaon.
Dutta died of cardiac ailment on Thursday morning at the All India Institute of Medical Science a couple of weeks after he was rushed to it. The party in rank and file have condoled his death and conveyed deep sympathy to the bereaved family members.
War of words between Khagen Sarma and Paresh Baruah refuses to die down. The ULFA commander in chief took on the state director general of police on Thursday a day after Sarma brushed aside any fresh peace process with any militant outfit. In a telephonic conversation, the ULFA boss contradicted said that if the Centre proceeds to talk to them then Sarma will have no say. Baruah further said that the DGP himself is not aware of what he is doing adding that ULFA-I is fully prepared for unconditional talks with the government. DGP on Wednesday straightly denied any fresh move for peace process with the militant outfit.
A huge thunderstorm unleashed no less reign of terror in many parts of the state leaving 3 people dead in Nagaon and Darrang districts on Thursday wee hours.Accompanied by heavy lightening, the thunderstorm took place in the wee hours ravaging many houses. Telephone and electricity network were left collapsed under the impact of the 30 minute long storm.The uprooted trees blocked a huge portion of the National Highway in Moran, Bokakhat, Nagaon, Jorhat, Lakhimpur and Dhemaji. It took several hours for the authorities to clear the road to restore surface communication.
A string of untoward incidents marred the AGP-sponsored 10 hour statewide Assam bandh in protest against Indo-Bangla land deal on Thursday.The stray incidents, mostly, took place early in the morning when AGP activists in large numbers came out to the road and burnt down tyres to disrupt surface communication.A section of AGP workers started enforcing the bandh by pelting stones Demow area where several local passengers sustained injury. Dr Amalendu Guha is dead leaving the entire state in a pall of gloom on Thursday.The end came for historian and social scientist at his own residence at 3-45 in the wee hours where he was keeping unwell for the last couple of weeks.Guha, who is known for his thought provoking writings, was born in 1924 in Imphal. As soon as the sad new spread life wild fire his relatives and fans thronged his residence to pay him their last respect. His is known for a number of books in Assamese, English and Bangla including From Planterraj to Swaraj. The lifeless Guha would be taken to GMCH as he has already donated body for research.
