The mortal remains of Anjan Dutta were consigned to flames on Friday a day after the APCC president died of cardiac arrest in New Delhi. After last respect to the lifeless former minister in Guwahati and Sivasagar, Dutta’s body was taken to Gaurisagar where he was cremated with full state honour in the afternoon. Former Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi and forest minister Pramila Rani Brahma, MP Ripun Bora were prominent among those who were present at the cremation ground. Before that thousands of bereaved Congress men received Dutta’s body at the Jorhat Airport in the morning and was taken to Sivasagar to facilitate his fans to pay their last respect in Sivasagar town and his birth place Gayan gaon.
Dutta died of cardiac ailment on Thursday morning at the All India Institute of Medical Science a couple of weeks after he was rushed to it. The party in rank and file have condoled his death and conveyed deep sympathy to the bereaved family members.
Heavy rains in Nagaland and Arunachal Pradesh threaten to submerge many parts of Assam during the next 24 hours. The water levels of the river Brahmaputra and her tributeries have started going up following the non stopped rainfalls from Friday in both the neighbouring states. The mighty river is flowing just an inch below the danger mark. But if this trend continues atleast ten to fifteen districts are likely to come under the surging waters. The worst-hit would be Lakhimpur and Dhemaji where the situation would worsen as soon as Arunachal Pradesh releases the excess waters from the hydel dams.According to the weathermen the situation would not improve for the next 48 hour.
The boy who went missing on the river Brahmaputra on Saturday is still to be rescued. NDRF officials have resumed rescue operation on Sunday on the mighty river near the Saraighat bridge. But there is hardly any clue. The youth jumped into the river on Saturday evening along with his girlfriend from the bridge. Construction workers rescued the girl in sub conscious state while the youth is still missing.
A local court in Karimganj has ordered action against central jail authority along with a group of doctors for violating jail rules. After an enquiry, the session court ordered suspension of Karimganj central jail superintendent DK Barua for allowing Siddique Ahmed to be shifted to Silchar Medical College Hospital from the Karimganj civil hospital during his judicial hospital without any approval of the court. The court further ordered action against the doctors who facilitated the former minister to be shifted citing deteriorated health.
Yet another mild tremor struck no less panic among the people on Saturday evening. Measuring 5.6 in the Rickhter scale, the tremor took place at 5.9 in the evening forcing the people in the high rise buildings to come down to the open space to escape a Nepal like episode. The earthquake which originated in Nepal was felt in the entire eastern and north eastern states of the country. There is no report of any casualty.
Problems after problems seem to have put Congress party in trouble hardly a year before the upcoming polls. A section of the APCC office bearers is quite unhappy with Anjan Dutta's new executive commitees. "Dutta should not have sidelined the senior leaders. This treatment would not help the party win the polls. We are shocked to have seen it," a senior party leader told Assam Times. Another leader deplored that the poll bound party needs fresh blood. But it need not disturb the senior potential leaders. "Dutta's new committe consists of many leaders who have been positioned as general secretary. Police have yet to get any clue of the two missing files belonging to the Kamrup(metro) deputy commissioner's office. Sources told Assam Times that police grilled a few selected employees of the registration branch on Thursday. But only to remain clueless. More and more employees would be quizzed to trace the crucial files which went missing on Wednesday.
There is some let up in the massive waterlogging that disrupted normal life in Guwahati. Surging waters have gone following the halt of rain. But the worst-hit Anilnagar, Nabin nagar are yet to get out of the blues. Waters are still there in some low lying areas. Local residents told Assam Times that this time the surging waters have gone much earlier which suggests that the on going works start working. Waterlogging wreaked havoc in parts of the city following heavy downpour on Thursday wee hours.
Eminent Assamese singer Pulak Banerjee inaugurated the first copy of Evolution, an English monthly, at Guwahati Press Club on 15 May 2015. Banerjee was assisted by senior journalists Nava Thakuria, Rajib Choudhury and Hiren Kalita to launch the new publication. Kailash Sarma, the editor of Evolution also spoke on the occasion.
The Students Federation of India is all prepared to gherao Dibrugarh University authority on Thursday alleging failure to conduct examination to help the students clear backlogs. Talking to Assam Times over telephone SFI leaders said that they would throng the varsity campus at 10 in the morning to gherao the administrative building to highlight the demands. They said they won’t allow the haphazard management of the semester system to continue. The varsity lacks facilities to hold the semester system. The delayed exams and results would immense inconvenience for the students, they said.
The AGP will take out a torch-lit procession and a rally in Guwahati on Saturday and Sunday to sharpen their protest the Indo-Bangla land swap deal.Party leaders told Assam Times that they would not allow it to happened. A senior party leaders said, “the deal must be scrapped. But we are there to prevent the authorities from implementing the deal where Assam would not be a gainer.”Another leader rued,” Congress and BJP are the two side of a coin in terms of anti-Assam policies. BJP is going to do whatever the Congress left undone.”The regional party on Wednesday staged sit-ins across the state to protest against ratification of the land boundary agreement by Parliament.
