Tearful farewell to Anjan Dutta

The mortal remains of Anjan Dutta were consigned to flames on Friday a day after the APCC president died of cardiac arrest in New Delhi. After last respect to the lifeless former minister in Guwahati and Sivasagar, Dutta’s body was taken to Gaurisagar where he was cremated with full state honour in the afternoon. Former Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi and forest minister Pramila Rani Brahma, MP Ripun Bora were prominent among those who were present at the cremation ground. Before that thousands of bereaved Congress men received Dutta’s body at the Jorhat Airport in the morning and was taken to Sivasagar to facilitate his fans to pay their last respect in Sivasagar town and his birth place Gayan gaon.

Dutta died of cardiac ailment on Thursday morning at the All India Institute of Medical Science a couple of weeks after he was rushed to it. The party in rank and file have condoled his death and conveyed deep sympathy to the bereaved family members.

Notorious car lifter Anil Chauhan has been brought to Tihar jail. Delhi police are likely to seek Chauhan in their remand to grill him in connection with a number of cases pending against him. Police are all prepared to move a local court in Delhi after they got the car lifter on transit remand. Chauhan, his wife were held along with Borkhola MLA Rumi Nath and her estrange husband Jakie Jackob in April.
A CBI special court on Tuesday sentenced a senior ONGC officer to 5 year imprisonment in a bribery case. Identified as Purna Kanta Bora, general manager(civil) was caught by the country's premier investigation agency two years back for accepting Rs 1 lakh from a contractor. The special court further fined him Rs 50,000 in the same offence. 
Normal train services to and from Guwahati remained heavily disrupted when local residents in Khetri and Dimoria blocked the trains at Digaru raising an old demand on Monday. Hundreds of local residents assembled a Digaru and squatted on the rail tracks demanding a manned level crossing to ensure their safety. The blockade forced as many ten trains halt on the way to and from Guwahati. The blockade lasted for around 3 hours. Later it was called off after senior railway officials assured the agitating people of looking into their demands.
Chief minister Tarun Gogoi failed to deliver the goods even after he got a good opportunity. This was more or less of what a section of the grassroot level people told Assam Times on the fourth anniversary day of his third term on Monday. "We hoped a lot when he took over a chief minister 14 years back. Chief minister Tarun Gogoi vows to leave no stone unturned to ensure allround development saying that he is firm on his commitment. In a statement he released on Sunday a day before the end of fourth year in the third consecutive term, he claimed to have restored financial stability to concentrate on sustainable development. 
Despite stiff resistance from Arvind Kejriwal and his lobby senior IAS officer from Assam Shakuntala Gamlin took over as Delhi chief secretery. Shakuntala, the daughter of former minister Lalit Doley and wife of former Arunachal Pradesh chief minister Jarbom Gamlin has alleged intimidation by a section of bureacrates not to take over. He was Lt Governor Jung who appointed her in the top post defying the chief minister's opposition who calls her corrupt. 
In yet another setback for AGP, yet another leader of the regional party joined BJP on Sunday. He was none other than Sabda Rabha who joined the saffron party at a brief function in presence of state unit president Siddhart Bhattacharya. Rabha told Assam Times that he was impressed with the party.
The Upamonyu Hazarika commission set up to study the progress in the Indo-Bangla border fencing is on a visit to Dhubri on Sunday to take stock of the birb wire fencing work along the international border. During his visit senior district and BSF officials apprised Hazarika of the progress of border fencing. The supreme court set up the one man panel to make an on the spot study of the progress which will have to report the findings by June 30. Hazarika will visit the entire border areas during the next couple of days.
A huge public convention in Guwahati on Sunday warned the government of dire consequences if it retains anti people policies and resorts to dirty politics to spoil the real objective of an updated NRC. Addressing the day long convention, noted intellectual Dr Hiren Gohain said the governments both in Delhi and Dispur have been adopting anti people policies to force the common people to bear the brunt. "The anti people policies are responsible for the non stopped suicide of the farmers.
