Singer, songwriter, composer Jim Ankan Deka has been awarded Renault Free The MusicAward. The young music prodigy from Assam is the youngest son of celebratedAssamese litterateur of Awahon-Ramdhenu Era, pioneer Assam economist and heritage scholar Prof Bhabananda Deka and pioneer lady radio playwright, storywriter and children’s magazine editor late Nalini Prava Deka. The awardee has already received laurels globally for his highly acclaimed Hindi-Assamese music album as a tribute to Delhi gang-rape victim ‘Aawaz : Speak Up Against Sexual Violence’ and also performed live together with top international music bands including ‘Michael Learns to Rock’ from Britain, ‘Orphaned Land’ from Israel and ‘Deep Forest’ from France in company of music legends like Grammy winner Eric Mouquet. Incidentally, a broad spectrum of Indian and international musicians have already recorded music and performed under the baton of Jim Ankan Deka, who has to his credit several English, Assamese, Kannada, Bengali, Hindi, Nagamese, Khasi, Mizo and Goalporiya song albums.
Bangalore and Shillong based Jim Ankan Deka was a self-taught musician and had been performing from the age of three. He was also professionally trained in the Assamese Vaisnavite music of Borgeet and playing with khol during his childhood. From early teens he had been assisting in film direction, and was the chiefassistant director of several documentary films including Assam Sahitya Sabha, Srimanta Sankardev and under-production full-length docu-feature biopic film Moi Eti Zazabor jointly directed by late Waesqurni Bora and Arnab Jan Deka, which is based on the life of legendary musician and Columbia University(New York) scholar Dr Bhupen Hazarika. Jim Ankan Deka brought out his first musical album Tumi Kowa Kothabor—The Things You Said in 1999 as an eighteen year old teenage prodigy with his own lyrics and composition. He shifted base to Bangalore in 2006 and set up his independent music studio and formed two music bands called Eastern Fare and Veenar, and has been composing songs and performing all overIndia and beyond. His pan-Indian and international musical foray had manifested in several albums of fusion music between Assamese and Hindi, Kannada, Bengali and English. He is also involved in trans-continental documentary film productions making his directorial debut with an Indo-American joint-venture film Nagaland : Journey Through the Choir of Clouds.

Guwahati police claimed to have arrested a gang of notorious kidnappers I connection with the kidnap of a Guwahati-based hotelier’s son two months ago.Police on Saturday night arrested five persons including a woman from Silchar who kidnapped the son of a businessman from Sonapur in November and demanded Rs 1 crore for safe release. Anti-big dam protest will take an aggressive turn as NHPC resumes construction of the projects at Gerukamukh. Addresng a press conference in Guwahati n Sunday, KMSS and AJYCP and TMPK have threatened to resume massive agitation if the works are not stopped immediately.KMSS leader Akhil Gogoi said that NHPC has gone back to its promises six months after it promised to stop working. The Delhi government has agreed to set up a statute of Chaolung Sukapha in the national capital. The assurance came from Delhi Chief minister Sheila Dixit who talked to her Assam counterpart Tarun Gogoi. Before that Gogoi in a letter requested Dixit to consider the proposal to set up the first Ahom king in the national capital. The initiative assumes significance after the government invited unprecedented criticism for not giving due status to the Ahom king.
Local residents in Goalpara district beat him a suspected militant to death on Saturday night. Three motorcycles suspected to have been used by the militants were recovered from the area.One bomb is suspected to be concealed in the MLA's house and a bomb disposal squad of the police reached the place, they added. Another IED went off at Jaleshwar High School. The other explosions in Goalpara district took place at Moriakichi Bazar, Gaurnagar, Porahita and Jamadar Bazar areas. In Dhubri, the areas hit by the blasts are Airketa, Sirajkuthi and Metarteri.
A series of low intensity blasts has forced the security forces to fan in lower Assam on Sunday. Suspected ULFA militants on Saturday night set off eight IED blasts in a space of 90 minutes targeting the house of an AIDUF MLA and crowded markets in Goalpara and Dhubri districts. There, is, however, no report of casualty.ULFA, along with some other insurgents group, gave a call for boycotting the Republic Day celebrations. The first blast took place inside the residential complex of Moinuddin Ahmed, MLA of All India Democratic United Front, at Jaleshwar in Goalpara district.
Over 20 people have been injured when a passenger bus slipped into deep gorge in near Guwahati on Saturday.The accident took place at around 2-30 in the afternoon when the passenger bus was on its way to Kamakhya and suddenly it lost control and fell on a gorge where several people were rescued by police and local residents.
Governor J B Patnaik said that the government's counter insurgency operations have fetched dividends where the republic day boycott call was defied. In his address after unfurling the national flag in Khanapara in Guwahati, he said that steps are being taken to bring about overall socio-economic development in the state.

Normal situation prevailed on Republic Day on Saturday. Trains and air services operated as usual though long distance and city private buses kept off the roads as the transport operators gave holiday to their staff on account of R-Day. National flags were seen fluttering in banks, educational institutions, etc., remained closed. Buses, private taxis and autorickshaws of state-run Assam State Transport Corporation (ASTC) plied as usual. Defying militant diktat, Republic Day was celebrated across the stat with much fanfare and cultural extravaganza. Tight security was put in place to ensure peace during the Republic Day and accordingly there was no report of any untoward incident so far.
