Needed safeguard to Assam sovereignty for talk: ULFA to Govt

The United Liberation Front of Asom has said it is ready to hold talks with the Centre provided the government agrees to safeguard the sovereignty of Assam. In a statement released here on Thursday night, the proscribed outfit’s chairman Arabinda Rajkhowa further said they will come out for negotiation with the government within a period of 24 hours once the central executive body is allowed to meet. Reacting to an article on ULFA in a local vernacular daily by writer Suchibrata Roy Choudhory, Rajkhowa said it’s their central leadership who have been striving for an amicable solution to the Indo-Assam conflict. The outfit has further alleged that the power-that-be in Delhi has been shying away from resolving it with a political negotiation.

The ULFA leadership is an insult to Assamese peoples. They have undertaken the most irresponsible and grotesque actions - in the name of freedom of Assam. Yet, they do not have the manhood, to even for once clarify the foundation of their struggle. They do not state their definitions of the two most important questions: 1. Who is an Assamese (and who is not), and 2. Where is the map of the Assam that they want to liberate? Without answering these two questions, the ULFA leadership cannot claim to represent Assam and the Assamese. If you look at the NSCN-IM, they have done a fabulous job of defining who a "Naga" is, and the shape and size of their proposed Nagalim country. Therefore, the Assamese people should bring the ULFA leadership to task, and get them to either stand up and answer questions that make sense, or shut up and get out. If the ULFA leadership wants to lead Assam, they should surrender immediately, and lead the Assamese country by surrendering to the Indians and taking power like AASU did in the 1980s; through the voting system. There is a mismatch between what the ULFA leadership wants, and what the Assamese peoples wants. ULFA leadership wants the issue of sovereignty discussed. Most Assamese peoples wants to figure out how to live in a flooded river basin. ULFA wants to get their jailed leadership freed, some Assamese peoples want the Bengalis to simply go back to Bengals (east and west). ULFA leadership wants a free Assam, the Assamese peoples wants ULFAs, SULFAs, BULFAs, the politicians, the police, the army and the rest of the idiots to go away for good. The ULFA leadership wants a long serious discussion with the Indians, over many years, regarding the right of Assam to be sovereign; while most Assamese people wants to figure out how the municipality system should work, so that garbage gets picked up everyday. There seems to be little that’s in common with what ULFA leaders want, and what the Assamese peoples wants. If ULFA leadership cannot leave their "lifestyle" in Bangladesh, and lead the Assamese people now, at the time of their most need, then they are not needed at all. There are people within our Assamese nation, who will not wait forever for the ULFA leadership to show their manhood. The clock is clicking. The ball is in ULFA leadership's hands, they can wait and meet their fate, or they can start leading the Assamese peoples and walk the talk. If they make a good attempt, and they turn out to be incompetent leaders, at least they gave it a shot. The ULFA leadership wants to win sovereignty without winning hearts of the Assamese peoples. As a personal opinion, after all the lives that they have destroyed in the Assamese country, I see no value in their continued activities in Assam. As a full blood Assamese, I call on all other full blood Assamese peoples, to stand up, and join me in democratically kicking out ULFA and their leadership, out of our country, and stop their rule of tyranny. Accident: 1 killed, 2 injured in Rangia

One person was killed and two others were injured on Saturday in an accident in Rangia on Saturday.According to police, the incident took place in Rangia in Kamrup (Rural) district when Rajat Ali died on the spot after his motorcycle rammed into an electric post after hitting a pedestrian Mustafijur Rahman at Karara on Indo-Bhutan international road. Flood fury scene improves further

The overall flood situation improves further on Saturday. The water level of the Brahmaputra river and its tributaries are receding gradually 100 hours after cessation of the rains. A section of the trapped people are preparing to leave the make shift camps. According to information, over 35 lakh people in 19 districts have been reeling under the floodwaves where the toll stands at 19.Over 3000 villages have been hit in latest wave of flood. The affected districts Barpeta, Darrang, Dhemaji, Dibrugarh, Golaghat, Goalpara, Jorhat, Kamrup rural and metro, Lakhimpur, Morigaon, Nagaon, Nalbari, Sibsagar, Sonitpur, Tinsukia, Dhubri, Baksa and Udalguri.

Major breakthrough in Sivasagar blast

Sivasagar police have achieved a major breakthrough in the recent of powerful blast that left a businessman killed and ten others injured. Police have arrested six youths in this connection and the initial confessional statements have suggested it a handiwork of ULFA. All the six have been arrested during a special operation led by additional SP in Sivasagar and Dibrugarh districts. They have been identified as Naba Gogoi, Narayan Gogoi, Papu Chetia, Nabajyoti Baruah and Upen Dihingia. According to inputs available with police, ULFA leader Bhaskar Nath alias Amlan Baruah planted the bomb near the Laxmi Talkies on Monday which exploded at 9 in the evening leaving Nirud Das dead.

Central team arrives in Kaziranga

A three-member central team has arrived in Kaziranga on Saturday to probe into the sudden rise in rhino poaching in the national park. Assam Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi said that that the CBI inquiry recommended by his government into rhino killings would be able to curb these incidents.

One more Kaziranga rhino found dead

One more rhinoceros was found dead at the Kaziranga National Park on Saturday. The carcass of the mature female rhino was found floating in the flood waters at Gorakati under Bagori Range of the park on Saturday. But the its horn was found intact. The horn from the body of the rhino was handed over to the forest department.

Gogoi draws flak on FDI in retail

CPM polit bureau member Brinda Karat came down heavily on Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi for coming out in support of FDI in multi-brand retail.Talking to reporters on Friday in Guwahati, Karat said that the Assam government can’t help the farmers when they are affected by flood. “But how FDI in retail would help the farmers. What can be more bankrupt than such an understanding?", she said.

Flood a national disaster: Karat

CPM on Friday on Friday said that Assam flood is a fit case of national disaster.Talking to reporters in Guwahati on Friday CPI(M) Politburo member Brinda Karat said that at a time when lakhs of people are reeling under flood, displaced people are living without food, without clothes, the cente should declare it as national disaster.She alleged that the Centre and state have not done enough to mitigate the misery of the people in third wave of floods to hit the state. He has asked her party cadres to mobilise resources for helping the flood affected people.

KNP poachers trigger acrimony

The repeated incidents of rhino poaching seem to have triggered an acrimonious blamegame between ruling Congress and opposition parties. A stunned forest minister Rockybul Hussain lashed out at AGP and BJP for blaming it all on him. Hussain has already alleged a smear campaign against him. AGP also blamed it all on the government’s failure. But Chief minister Tarun Gogoi flayed AGP and BJP alleging that more rhinos were killed in Kaziranga during the AGP and NDA regimes.

Poaching: Doubt over KPLT hand

International animal body smugglers are involved in the Kaziranga rhino poaching. Four rhinos were shot dead in Karbi Anglong bordering Nagaland. The needle of suspicion points at KLNLF, KPLT and NSCN.According to initial inputs, rhino horns are routed through Dimapur to south-east Asian countries where a rhino horn is sold at Rs50 lakh to Rs1crore in the international market.

Army to counter rhino poaching

Army would counter rhino poachers in Kaziranga. Dispur has asked police to work jointly with army and para paramilitary forces to stop the repeated incidents of rhino poaching. An anti-poaching squad would be set up in a day or two with focus on the 860 sq km Kaziranga National Park. The move comes following the shooting of four rhinos within 48 hours. Two rhinos were hacked off. Forces would be allowed to take appropriate action against anyone involved in poaching.
