Why don’t stop animal sacrifice

Animal sacrifice in Durga puja strikes no less shock and anger among many organizations and individuals across the state

Dozens of buffalos and goats are being sacrificed in many temples in the name of Durga puja from Tuesday. A glimpse of the buffalos, goats, ducks and pigeons being kept for sacrifice at the historic Kamakhya temple premises really shocks the animal lovers. Same it is in many places where the same shocking tradition is allowed in Durga Puja.

 “We are helpless. We have been dead opposed to the tradition of animal sacrifice. But the organizers have been refusing to read our campaign. This is a matter of grave concern,” said Shailen Saikia from Sivasagar district who has been campaigning against animal sacrifice.

Juli Chutia from Kakojan area in Jorhat told Assam Times that the people must understand the reality. “The things have undergone a sea change now. Everywhere change reigns supreme. But we don’t understand why we are still stick to this tradition. Our minds need to be changed.”

“It would take time to end the tradition of animal sacrifice. If 1000 buffalos and 5000 goats were sacrificed ten years ago, now 50 buffalos and 100 goats are being sacrificed,” said Pranjal Bora from Nagaon.

Bora who is running a non governmental organization told Assam Times over telephone that a massive campaign is the need of the hour against animal sacrifice which has yet to take place. “The campaign should have taken place at least 3 months before the commencement of the Durga puja. People from the nook and corner of the state should be aware of it. But I do hope that after 20 years the tradition of animal sacrifice would die down,” he said.

I think it is time to do away with animal sacrifice. It is a barbaric practise.It should stop both for hindu festivals as well as for other religions like for bakrid.

About 150 years back it was a 'religious custom' in India to force widows to get burnt on their husband's funeral pyre (Sati) today we consider it a barbaric tradition. Similarly, years from now, our future generations will look back at us and call us barbaric. A god who wants the blood of an innocent animal to satisfy him/her cannot be called a god. It can only be a devil/demon. Rather the people who sacrifice animals (be it Bakr Id or Durga Pooja) are devils who sully the name of their god with their crime of killing innocent animals.

Despite the indefinite economic blockade in Sonitpur district, suspected miscreants from Arunachal Pradesh unleashed a reign of terror in Bihali on Monday.The miscreants made several rounds of firing at a tiny hamlet along the Assam-Arunachal Pradesh border on Monday wee hours. The fresh incident of attack took place at Jinjinia in the wee hours where the miscreants set on fire a house before leaving the village.Security forces rushed to the spot. But by then they managed to escape from the village.      
The death toll in the Chauldhua attack gas gone up to 12 with the recovery of one more body in Hatipota area.The decomposed body was recovered by the local villagers on Monday morning. It has yet to be identified. Hundreds of students in Guwahati hit the streets in the city in protest against the Lajpotnagar incident in New Delhi where goons killed an Arunachal Pradesh student.With placards and banners in their hands, the students in large number shouted slogans demanding measures to curb the increasing incident of racial attack on the north eastern people in the national capital. Identified as Nido Tania, the student from the neighbouring state was beaten to death by a group of shopkeepers following an altercation in the Lajpotnagar area in the capital on Thursday.Photo: Protest rally at Shillong. 
Amid an indefinite economic blockade against Arunachal Pradesh in protest against the Bihali attack, NCLT is accused of masterminding the Chauldhuwa incident where 10 villagers were killed in firing.Sources further have charged a Tawang district council member with masterminding the incident.
Sonitpur police have registered two cases in connection with the Chauldhuwa massacre. This was what formally DGP Khagen Sarma told reporters in Tezpur on Sunday.Sarma, who reviewed the situation in the district with Deputy Commissioner Lalit Gogoi and Superintendent of Police Sayukta Parashar along with Army officials at a high level meeting in Tezpur Circuit House said that the Arunachal Pradesh government has also registered a case in this connection.
Counter offensive against the insurgent outfits are getting intensified in the BTAD areas.Security forces claimed to have killed a dreaded KLO militant at an encounter in Kokrajhar on Saturday. According to information, the fierce gun fighting took place at Salakati area at night during the combing operation against all militant outfits in the area.KLO leader Brindabon Rajbanshi died on the spot and another dreaded militant managed to escape from the spot. Combing operation is going on in search of the militant on the run.

Amid simmering tension and indefinite road blockade in protest against the Chauldhuwa incident, Arunachal Pradesh Chief Minister Nabam Tuki on Saturday announced compensation to the victim’s family members.The announcement came up when he met a delegation from Assam in Nahorjan. Tuki expressed utter shock at the incident and said that the culprits would not be spared.

The Assam government has announced a rare dose of ambitious schemes for the patients.Addressing a press conference in Guwahati on Saturday, health minister Dr Himanta Biswa Sarma said that the government will launch a scheme of health insurance for the patients suffering from critical diseases.He said that the patients suffering from cancer, heart and kidney transplant would get Rs 2,50,00 against the insurance amount of Rs 200.Beside, the state will get 20 cancer hospitals apart from one each in the six medical colleges.
