Animal sacrifice in Durga puja strikes no less shock and anger among many organizations and individuals across the state.
Dozens of buffalos and goats are being sacrificed in many temples in the name of Durga puja from Tuesday. A glimpse of the buffalos, goats, ducks and pigeons being kept for sacrifice at the historic Kamakhya temple premises really shocks the animal lovers. Same it is in many places where the same shocking tradition is allowed in Durga Puja.
“We are helpless. We have been dead opposed to the tradition of animal sacrifice. But the organizers have been refusing to read our campaign. This is a matter of grave concern,” said Shailen Saikia from Sivasagar district who has been campaigning againstanimal sacrifice.
Juli Chutia from Kakojan area in Jorhat told Assam Times that the people must understand the reality. “The things have undergone a sea change now. Everywhere change reigns supreme. But we don’t understand why we are still stick to this tradition. Our minds need to be changed.”
“It would take time to end the tradition of animal sacrifice. If 1000 buffalos and 5000 goats were sacrificed ten years ago, now 50 buffalos and 100 goats are being sacrificed,” said Pranjal Bora from Nagaon.
Bora who is running a non governmental organization told Assam Times over telephone that a massive campaign is the need of the hour againstanimal sacrifice which has yet to take place. “The campaign should have taken place at least 3 months before the commencement of the Durga puja. People from the nook and corner of the state should be aware of it. But I do hope that after 20 years the tradition of animal sacrifice would die down,” he said.

I think it is time to do away with animal sacrifice. It is a barbaric practise.It should stop both for hindu festivals as well as for other religions like for bakrid.

About 150 years back it was a 'religious custom' in India to force widows to get burnt on their husband's funeral pyre (Sati) today we consider it a barbaric tradition. Similarly, years from now, our future generations will look back at us and call us barbaric.
A god who wants the blood of an innocent animal to satisfy him/her cannot be called a god. It can only be a devil/demon. Rather the people who sacrifice animals (be it Bakr Id or Durga Pooja) are devils who sully the name of their god with their crime of killing innocent animals.
The special train carrying the injured people from Chapra in Bihar is on the way to Dibrugarh. The train is expected to arrive in the Dibrugarh station in the afternoon. The train left Paltanbazar station at 8 in the morning two and a half hour after it reached Guwahati. Six passengers were killed and 30 others sustained injury when the Dibrugarh bound Rajdhani Express carrying them from Delhi jumped off the rails at Chapra in Bihar on Wednesday.
A rising water level of the Brahmaputra has forced the authority in Guwahati to suspend ferry services on the mighty river. Talking to Assamtimes, official sources said that the ferry service from Kachari ghat to North Guwahati would be opened only after receding of the waterlevel. The Kamrup(metro) district has deployed a few ASTC buses to North Guwahati to clear the rush.

Parts of the upper Assam districts have come under flood after the waterlevels of the Brahmaputra and its tributeries rose following the incessant rains that lashed the catchment areas during the last couple of days. Some vital roads in Sivasagar, Jorhat and Dibrugarh districts have come under the surging waters damaging crops in the paddy fields. The situation could turn grave as the water levels of these rivers have been rising alarmingly.
Chief minister Tarun Gogoi on Tuesday left it on party high command to decide on his fate as chief minister. Talking to reporters after his meeting with Mallikarjun Kharge in the morning, Gogoi said that he had hardly any idea of his top job and that party high command would take the final call. His statement assumes significance a day after the dissidant ministers and MLAs formaly demanded removal of Gogoi as chief minister. Atleast 15 people had a narrow escape when the houses they lived in were collapsed in landslide in Guwahati on Tuesday. The incident took place in the wee hours at Jyotinagar near Bamunimoidam when a wall slipped into their houses. The family members managed to escape the tragedy.

AICC leader Mallikarjun Kharge took stock of the voice of growing resentment within the party ministers and MLAs in Guwahati on Monday. Suspected NDFB militants are believed to have kidnapped an engineer from Andhra Pradesh Haflong last week. Sources have confirmed a demand of Rs. 6 crore ransom for the release forcing police to launch a combing operation in the entire district. Identified as Nagamalleswara Rao, a native of the Prakasam district in Andhra Pradesh, is employed with a private firm in Assam. According to police, he was abducted on June 16 as he was working as the manager of a stone crusher unit. The reason for abduction is extortion. Around five suspected militants entered the stone crushing unit at Kalachand, about 60 kilometres from Haflong and kidnapped the 36-year-old manager.
