Kokrajhar police and forest department have jointly evicted 140 illegal huts and house from the Mahamaya reserve forest on Wednesday.
Talking to reporters in Kokrjahar, SP Shyamal Prasad Saikia said that many miscreants from Dhubri have been illegally settling inside the Mahamaya reserve forest. For the last couple of months they have been settling in a huge in Panbari in the BTAD Kokrajhar district.
He said that police and forest department have jointly cleared the entire area in presence of district magistrate and concern officials.
“Over 800 bighas of forest land have come under encroachment in the forest area which were cleared on Wednesday. Nobody would be further allowed to settle inside the forest,” said Saikia.

Over 20 people have been injured when a passenger bus slipped into deep gorge in near Guwahati on Saturday.The accident took place at around 2-30 in the afternoon when the passenger bus was on its way to Kamakhya and suddenly it lost control and fell on a gorge where several people were rescued by police and local residents.
Governor J B Patnaik said that the government's counter insurgency operations have fetched dividends where the republic day boycott call was defied. In his address after unfurling the national flag in Khanapara in Guwahati, he said that steps are being taken to bring about overall socio-economic development in the state.

Normal situation prevailed on Republic Day on Saturday. Trains and air services operated as usual though long distance and city private buses kept off the roads as the transport operators gave holiday to their staff on account of R-Day. National flags were seen fluttering in banks, educational institutions, etc., remained closed. Buses, private taxis and autorickshaws of state-run Assam State Transport Corporation (ASTC) plied as usual. Defying militant diktat, Republic Day was celebrated across the stat with much fanfare and cultural extravaganza. A powerful Improvised Explosive Devices was recovered ahead of the Republic Day celebrations in Darrang district on Thursday.The bomb was found near the Mangaldoi police station and Republic Day parade ground in the morning. Guwahati Police have arrested 8 persons including a Mizoram forest department official and recovered some rare species of snake in Guwahati.
