Visit to flood-hit areas

 East Siang Deputy Commissioner Isha Khosla along with Mebo ADC Yemling Tayeng, members of District Disaster Management Authority visited the flood affected villages like remote Namsing, Mer and Gadum to assess the situation.

DC Khosla was shocked by seeing the quantum of damages of Mebo subdivision. At Taratamak, EE apprised the DC of a suitable scheme, DPR has been prepared and already been submitted to the government.

While inspecting the Mebo-Dhola road, Khosla instructed the executing agency to maintain quality and long-lasting restoration work whenever necessary fund is made available to them.

Concerned over the serious devastation made by the nature’s fury in the areas, she appealed the local people including PRIs to extend their fullest cooperation and volunteered services to the executing agency during restoration process.

Vaisnavite veteran dies

Renowned vaishnavite veteran Sonaram Chutia passed away after a brief ailment on Wednesday. Chutia died at the Jorhat Medical College Hospital at 9.15 in the evening. He was 98 and was accorded with cabinet rank 3 years back. Born on June 8 in 1915, Chutia cleared his graduation in science from Cotton College. His cremation is taking place on Thursday with full state honour.

Truck load of wine seized in Dhemaji

In major breakthrough, Dhemaji police intercepted a truckload of IMFL coming from Arunachal Pradesh suspected to be distributed among the voters just before the polling of panchayat elections.The truck carrying 4000 litres of IMFL in bottles were seized by the excise department at Laluk last night by the district administration.The truck driver claimed that the liquor bottled at Naharlagun in Arunachal Pradesh and were being transported to that state's East Siang district through the only road between the two places which runs through Lakhimpur district.

Youth arrest for child rape

Karimganj police on Wednesday confirmed the arrest of a youth for torturing a five-year-old girl. The five-year-old girl, who went missing on January 28 evening, was found lying in a paddy field with severe injuries near her house at Pinnagar village on January 29. Her father alleged that she was raped by the youth, who was arrested by the police on the basis of the allegation. But the youth claimed that he was asked by the girl's father to take her home but she entered a wedding function on the way and went missing from there. Medical examination revealed that she was tortured and severely beaten up but whether she was raped or not was yet to be ascertained.The girl is undergoing...

Panchayat polling over

Barring a few stray incidents polling for the first phase of panchayat election are over registering a huge turn out in 8 districts on Wednesday.The polling began at 7 in the morning and ended at 3 in the afternoon where 28,680 candidates are in the fray in eight districts. Among them, 643 have contested for the post of zilla parishad member, 2,801 for anchalik panchayat member, 3,099 for gaon panchayat president's post and 22,137.The first phase include Tinsukia, Dibrugarh, Jorhat, Sivasagar, Golaghat, Kaliabor, Nagaon Sadar, Lakhimpur and Dhemaji districts.

ARSU protest disrupts train services

Normal train services remained heavily disrupted in Goalpara and Kamrup districts on Tuesday when ARSU activists blocked the roads in protest against holding of panchayat elections in Rabha Hasong Autonomous Council areas. Hundreds of ARSU activists blocked rail tracks at several places in Goalpara and Kamrup districts to protest holding of panchayat elections in villages which fall under RHAC areas. ULFA claims responsibility of explosion

ULFA has owned up the responsibility of the strike in oil pipeline at Makum on Tuesday. In a statement, the outfit claimed to have used PMTD technology to blow up the oil pipeline which took place on Tuesday morning. ULFA man killed in encounter

Security forces claimed to have killed a hardcore ULFA militant following a heavy exchange of firing in Goalpara district on Tuesday.The encounter took place in early in the morning at Khardang near Dudhnoi bordering Meghalaya where the ULFA militant was killed to be later identified as Niyar Asom. A pistol along with a magazine and several rounds of bullets. Two army jawans have also been injured in the encounter who have been rushed to the hospital.
