Tai Ahom, Koch Rajbanshi, Moran, Mutocks along with two others are likely to get ST status.
The good news for the six communities has come from the Centre when the six ethnic communityleaders hunkered down with Union tribal affairs minister Juel Ornam in New Delhi on Thursday.
Flanked by sports minister Sarbabanda Sonowal, Ornam said the Centre will have to change the modalities in the soon to be held cabinet meeting.
After the seal of approval from the cabinet, the modalities would be ready. It would take two or three months to complete the entire proceedings.
Later the delegation talked to union home minister Rajnath Singh at his official residence.
The move assumed significance despite the escalating protest of the existing ST people.

The other two are tea tribes and Sutiya not chutia. Ahom , Koch and Sutiya were ruling class of Assam during medievel period. Next time please name the ''other two'' as sentiments are related to it.
Much to a major relief, a hardcore ULFA militant has surrendered before Guwahati city police a day before the Republic Day on Saturday.Identified as Gautom Nath alias Chetia surrendered before senior police superintendent Anand Praksh Tiwary in the evening. Gautom said that he found it quite difficult to continue it and decided to come back to the national mainstream. The close associate of Drishtri Rajkhowa who heads the crack unit (Battalion No 27)) joined ULFA in 2007. He hails from Sonitpur district. Guwahati police busted a gang of thieves during an intensified operation in the city on Saturday.The operation was launched in the Bhutnath area where 11 thieves were captured and some stolen materials including a bike were seized from their possession. KMSS president Akhil Gogoi threatens to occupy more plots of lands and other properties belonging to Suresh Prithani, Koilash Lohia and Ramavtar Agarwalla after January 26. “Before that they must hand over their plots to the farmers they procured for industrial purpose,” said Gogoi.Addressing a press conference in Guwahati on Saturday, Gogoi dared Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi to take action against these businessmen in question.
