Tai Ahom, Koch Rajbanshi, Moran, Mutocks  along with two others are likely to get ST status.

The good news for the six communities has come from the Centre when the six ethnic community leaders hunkered down with Union tribal affairs minister Juel Ornam in New Delhi on Thursday.

Flanked by sports minister Sarbabanda Sonowal, Ornam said the Centre will have to change the modalities in the soon to be held cabinet meeting.

After the seal of approval from the cabinet, the modalities would be ready. It would take two or three months to complete the entire proceedings.

Later the delegation talked to union home minister Rajnath Singh at his official residence.

The move assumed significance despite the escalating protest of the existing ST people.

The other two are tea tribes and Sutiya not chutia. Ahom ,  Koch and Sutiya were ruling class of Assam during medievel period. Next time please name the ''other two'' as sentiments are related to it.

Businessman kidnapped

2 more Nido killers held

Delhi police on Tuesday arrested two more miscreants involved in the killing of Nido Tania hours after Union home minister assured north east students of firm action against the perpetrators.But the main culprit is still on the run. Earlier on Tuesday, three others were sent to the jail day after the trio were held in connection with the lyncing of the Arunachal Pradesh student.

Jail for Nido killers

A local court in New Delhi on Tuesday sent the three miscreants accused in the murder of Nido Tania to jail hardly 24 hours after they were arrested.But that’s not all. The north east students in the capital demand CBI probe into the allegations of police lapse. The student delegation told Union home minister Sushilkumar Shinde to institute a judicial probe into the allegations against the policemen on the spot.  

AGP moves EC against CM

The Opposition Asom Gana Parishad on Tuesday moved state election commission alleging gross violation of constitution by two Congress leaders in the run up to the Rajya Sabha polls.The regional party in its complaint has accused chief minister Tarun Gogoi and his education minister Dr Himanta Biswa Sarma of violating the constitution to ensure smooth sailing of the BPF candidate Biswajeet Daimary in the upcoming Rajya Sabha polls.

AGP issues whip

The Opposition Asom Gana Parishad on Tuesday has issued whip to its party legislators to vote for Haidor Hussain in the Rajya Sabha polls slated for February 7. The three line whip is being issued to all party legislators three days ahead of the polls. A legislator would forfeit his seat if he or she violates the party whip.

Daimary files complaint

In a bizarre move, BPF candidate for the upcoming Rajya Sabha poll Biswajeet Daimary has lodged a complaint against independent candidate Haidor Hussain alleging an attempt to prevent a section of opposition legislators from voting in his favour in the upcoming polls.Daimary called on returning officer Gauranga Prasad Das on Tuesday in Dispur where he filed the complaint demanded cancellation of the opposition consensus candidate’s nomination.The BPF leader on Monday publicly alleged that a Hussian told a section of AGP, BJP and AIUDF MLAs not to vote Daimary.

ULFA challenges Modi

United Liberation Front of Asom (ULFA) has dared Narendra Modi to withdraw the non Assamese settlers from the state.In a strongly worded statement issued to the media on Tuesday, the outfit said that the BJP’s prime ministerial candidate must know that the Hindu and Muslim people who settled in Assam after 1947 are never indigenous people.Modi is set to attend a huge rally in Guwahati on February 8.

Ninong meets Shinde

Union minister Ninong Eering on Tuesday urged the Union home minister Sushilkumar Shinde to formulate law to prevent racial attack on the north east people in New Delhi.During his half an hour meeting with Shinde, the Union minister from Arunachal Pradesh said that only a strict enforcement of a set of tough laws would help the north east people from getting ride of the racial attacks which has been taking place at regular intervals in the capital.
