Tai Ahom, Koch Rajbanshi, Moran, Mutocks along with two others are likely to get ST status.
The good news for the six communities has come from the Centre when the six ethnic communityleaders hunkered down with Union tribal affairs minister Juel Ornam in New Delhi on Thursday.
Flanked by sports minister Sarbabanda Sonowal, Ornam said the Centre will have to change the modalities in the soon to be held cabinet meeting.
After the seal of approval from the cabinet, the modalities would be ready. It would take two or three months to complete the entire proceedings.
Later the delegation talked to union home minister Rajnath Singh at his official residence.
The move assumed significance despite the escalating protest of the existing ST people.

The other two are tea tribes and Sutiya not chutia. Ahom , Koch and Sutiya were ruling class of Assam during medievel period. Next time please name the ''other two'' as sentiments are related to it.

A police man has been suspended in Guwahati for inhuman torture he inflicted on a city bus driver who refused to pay hi m money.The incident took place in Jalukbari area in the city where the policemen asked him to pay fine for halting at unauthorized place. Akhil Gogoi’s mother Priyoda Gogoi is on a hunger strike near Jorhat on Tuesday demanding immediate release of her son who was arrested on Sunday in connection with the recent self immolation case.Flanked by 50 local KMSS workers, Gogoi began her hunger strike at her own residence in Teok from Tuesday morning.Several local organizations also have visited her and promised help.
Two poachers are believed to have sustained injury at an encounter with forest guards in Kaziranga on Tuesday.The encounter took place in the wee hours near Luit forest camp in the Sixth addition of the national park where the poachers are believed to have been injured.A team of forest guards are looking for the injured poachers inside the national park. Forest guards further claimed to have seized a boat along with some bullets from the spot.

One person died and five others have been injured when suspected ULFA militants exploded a powerful bomb in Tinsukia.The explosion took place at Sripura around 8-30 in the morning where one person was killed on the spot.The injured have been rushed to the hospital after the arrival of police. Former Union home secretary Gopal Krishna Pillai has cancelled his stock-taking visit to BTAD on Tuesday.According to home ministry, Pillai has cancelled his visit because of inconvenience in helicopter services on Tuesday.But reliable sources told Assam Times that Pillai has cancelled his visit in the face of simmering protest in BTAD by a section of Bodo and non Bodo organizations.Pillai, however, has not fixed the date of his next attempt.On the other hand, the development has disappointed the Bodo National Convention leaders who were all set to hold a huge rally to woo Pillai who is studying the separate Bodoland demands.
Former minister Hitendra Nath Goswami joined BJP on Monday a week after he left AGP. Goswami is not the first AGP leader to have joined the saffron party. Former AGP president Chandra Mohan Patowary and Jagadish Bhuyan are also likely to join the party.Patowary is believed to have been camping in New Delhi for instant touch with central BJP leaders.
