Centre’s NO to ST status

The centre has rejected the demands for ST status to six ethnic tribes forcing many organizations to hit the streets.

Ministry for tribal affairs sources told Assam Times in New Delhi that after a thorough study the authorities have  rejected the demands ST status for tea garden workers, Ahoms, Koch Rajbanshi, Chutias and Muttocks citing lack of laid down norms.

The decision is set to run into a hail of protest in Delhi and Dispur. The demand was long standing and both Delhi and Dispur have been assuring these ethnic tribes of their due status for the last ten years.

Both Congress and BJP promised S status for the 6 ethnic tribes for overall uplift.

This exposes the governments scandalous motives and false poll promises. This also goes against the spirits of the Pro Talks faction of ULFA , whom the government had promised the STfication of the state .Successive governments have done this and the present has proved that they are no better than the previous.

ITANAGAR : The State Government has announced Ex-gratia of Rs 20 lakhs for diseased families with government job and Rs 10 lakhs for seriously injured person in the recent protest against government's consideration to give  PRC to 6 communities. Illicit liquor toll up, up, up

JORHAT: The ghost of spurious liquor continues to haunt the state after it claimed 150 lives in Jorhat and Golaghat districts from Friday. Around 137 others are still battling to survive at Jorhat Medical College Hospital and Golaghat Civil Hospital being attended by a section of medical specialists. Doctors told Assam Times that the toll might touch 200 mark since as many as 40 patients are in critical condition. “We have been closely monitoring the patients who need further observation. Jorhat: Both Jorhat and Golaghat districts have turned into a valley of death where at least 115 people died after consuming spurious liquor on Thursday night. Jorhat: The death toll in the illicit liquor tragedy in Golaghat and Jorhat districts is nearing 100 sending huge shock and anger across the state. According to an updated information, in Salmira area alone the toll has gone up to 70 including 5 more deaths from Merapani area. Jorhat: The death toll in the illicit liquor tragedy in Golaghat and Jorhat districts have reached 77 sending huge shock and anger across the state.  According to an updated information, in Salmira area alone the toll has gone up to 60.
