A three day International conference on "Self, World and morality: Schopenhauer and Indian Philosophy with a special reference to the Upanishads ( Oupnek’hat)”   was held at Jawaharlal Nehru University, New Delhi by the Indian Division of Schopenhauer  Society jointly with the Philosophy department of Deshbandhu College in collaboration with the Special Center for Sanskrit Studies, JNU and the Schopenhauer Research Center of the University of Mainz, Germany. On behalf of the distinguished Schopenhauerian scholar Prof. Matthias Kossler, the President of the Schopenhauer Gesellschaft, Dr Lipprandt presented his greetings note on this occasion.

A large number of foreign scholars from Germany, France and Australia and many scholars from across India assembled at the Convention Centre, JNU during 23-25  Feb 2015 to pay their tribute and respect in memory of the first significant Western Philosopher who carried the wisdom of the Upanishads and the Buddhist ideas to the Western world. Schopenhauer was deeply influenced and overwhelmed by the Indian Philosophical thought and he considered Upanishads "the solace" of his life and “solace of death" too.

Welcoming the audience, Dr. Aarti Barua, Director of the Indian Division of the Schopenhauer Society, briefly talked about the purpose of the conference and Dr Ramnath Jha  JNU, gave a thematic introduction about the seminar. Inaugurating the seminar, Honorable Prof. S K Sopory , Vice Chancellor, JNU, New Delhi, paid high tribute to Schopenhauer in his inaugural speech. Expressing deep regret that Indian scholars so far have failed to give due recognition to Schopenhauer's contribution in popularizing Indian philosophy in the West, Prof. Sopory highly appreciated the efforts taken by the SCSS and IDSS towards giving due recognition to Schopenhauer. He appreciated that the new generation of Indian scholars have recognized the void and are trying to fill it by creating an awareness about Schopenhauer's contribution amongst us. He said that the bridge Schopenhauer built to connect Indian metaphysics with Western ontology should now be strengthened.

On this occasion a Souvenir of the conference was released by the member secretary of ICPR Prof M P Singh and many distinguished scholars have sent their good wishes for the success of the conference as message for the souvenir. It was a very successful event. 

A large number of distinguished participants and students were present to pay respect to Arthur Schopenhauer (1788-1860) on the occasion of his 227th birth anniversary. A special tribute was paid to Schopenhauer by garlanding his photo. Dr. Arati Barua, the chief organizer of the conference on behalf of IDSS and Special Centre for Sanskrit Studies, proposed a vote of thanks. The students chanted slokas from Upanishads  in Sanskrit which had the audience spell bound.

In the valedictory session of the Conference Prof. Shashi Prabha Kumar, V C , Sanschi University of Buddhist-Indic studies, delivered a special lecture . Dr. R N Jha, coordinator of the conference on behalf of Special Centre for Sanskrit Studies, proposed a vote of thanks to all present there.

Garo National Liberation Army militants killed three people including a women along the Assam-Meghalaya border on Tuesday.The incident occurred when a group of five armed militants stormed the Garodoba village in southwest Garo Hills district  bordering Assam and shot dead 32-year-old Sridina A. Sangma and 42-year-old Anirud Hajong. Then the militants fled from the spot. A massive manhunt is on to nab these militants. 
Five minor boys have been arrested for allegedly gang raping  a 12-year-old at Guwahati. The incident took place at Hatigaon area in the city on Sunday.The girl was gang-raped near her home on at night in the absence of her mother who was a daily wage earner. The five boys aged between 12 to 16 years allegedly called her outside the house. Her mother lodged the FIR at the Basistha police station. All the five boys have been taken into custody. They would be produced in the Juvenile Court here on Wednesday. After medical examination, she was sent to the State Home for Women for her rehabilitation.
Assam joins Viswakarma puja celebrations with a colourful festive spirit across the state on Tuesday.Puja offerings began in the morning before the idols of the Lord Viswakarma in the industrial units, factories and technical institutes. Viswakarma puja was observed in assamtimes campus where its employees and family members are offering pujas to the god of construction. 
Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi said that Narendra Modi will never come as the Prime Minister. Talking to reporters, Gogoi said that BJP is focusing only on Hindu votes. He said Modi has links with the RSS and BJP does not have any authority over its decisions as everything is decided by the RSS.
Around 40,000 posts are lying vacant in different departments. These would be filled up within six months.According to Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi, “the total vacancies across all the departments will be around 35,000-40,000 at present. Our plan is to fill up these vacancies in the next six months.Gogoi who addressed a press conference in Dispur on Monday said that the education department has highest number of vacancies. This is followed by the police department. Gogoi has asked the departments to give the report on the list of vacancies by September 30.
Yet another rape incident has shocked Assam. The gruesome incident took place in Karbi Anglong district where the victim is an 11-year old girl. The minor girl was raped by a neighbor before being dumped at a nearby place assuming her to be dead.The entire incident which took place in the first week of September came to light only on Sunday.According to allegations, the girl was raped by her 24-year-old neighbour Tinku Sahu after taking her to a nearby sugarcane field at Kheroni on September 6. Assuming her to be dead, he abondoned the girl who was later recovered with multiple injuries. Sahu was arrested and was sent to jail.
Security forces claimed to have killed a hardcore NDFB militant belonging to the Songbijit faction at an encounter in Kokrajhar district on Sunday. The encounter took place in the evening at Ultapani jungle under Bismuri police outpost. The militant cadres was identified as Bilifang Basumatary of Mohenpur village. He is believed to be the section commander in Bismuri. He was involved with several extortion and anti-government activities in the region. A 7.65 mm pistol, two grenade, 6 live ammunition, three empty cases, two mobile handsets were recovered from him.
An army jawan has been arrested on Sunday for alleged attempt to rape a sleeping woman inside in an air-conditioned coach of a running train on Sunday.The incident took place in the wee hours at the Guwahati-Ledo Inter City Express. The accused jawan from the 299 Field Regiment, posted at Maiballa in Sonari under Sibsagar district of Assam, was arrested at Mariani station by railway police.According to the allegation, she was sleeping in the upper berth of an AC 3-tier coach, while the jawan was sleeping in the middle, her mother in the lower berth and her brother in a side berth.The jawan also tried to prevent her from shouting by putting his hand on her mouth but she managed to raise an...
At least nine workers from Assam were killed and 11 injured when suspected militants triggered a powerful IED blast at Khoyathong in the heart of Imphal on Friday. Six others have been critically injured. The bomb exploded at 7.35 in the evening inside a camp where the labourers housed. Nine workers died on the spot.  Police called it an IED planted by militants. This has forced the security forces to step up vigil in the capital city.
