Continuous erosion caused by Dikhou river has now become a threat to the existence of the historic Gorokhiya Dol located in Nazira. The lackadaisical attitude of the concerned departments has left the monument in a deplorable condition. If nothing is done at the moment, the monument built in the 17th century during the reign of the Ahom kings, may soon become extinct.

Convention on ethnic identity

Preparations are afoot for holding a state level convention in Nazira on ethnic identity of the Assamese. Film actor Dinesh will open the convention organized by the Pragatishil Jatiya Nagarik Mancha of Assam at the Kaliprashad Memorial public library on October 30. The convention will discuss safeguarding the ethnic identity of the Assamese people, demand for decentralisation of powers and prevent illegal migration and the measures to strengthen the Assamese nationality. The All India CISF Inter Sector Football Tournament gets underway in Nazira from Tuesday. ONGC Executive Director of Assam Asset BK Baruah opened the tournament at a brief function in the morning where altogether 18 teams from different sectors of the CISF are prepared to participate in the tournament at Nazira.

Yoga therapy in Nazira

Nazira is gearing up for an upcoming yoga amp in the town which would help the people bring health awareness. Organized by Ankuran Sangeet Vidalaya, the camp would take place from October 13 to 18 at the Nazira Bibah Bhavan where renowned Yoga therapist Nolin Nath is scheduled to participate.

Nazira joins cleanliness drive

Nazira also joins the cleanliness campaign with MLA Debobrata Saikia sweeping a puja pandel with a bundle of broomstick on Tuesday.Nazira Municipal Board Chairman  and vice chairman Abdur Rohman and Lutfur Rohman also participated in the campaign along with other Congress members.

Arrested journos axed from body

Once again the functionings of a section of journalists have raised doubts in Nazira.Jorhat police held two free lance journalists in connection with a honey trapping case forcing the Nazira Freelance Journalist Association to axe the duo.Identified as Diganta Saikia and Jayanta Chetia, the journalists were arrested in Jorhat on Monday.In a related development, the Amar Kotha authorities have sacked Diganta Saikia as Executive Editor of the news paper.

Gogoi’s effigy burnt in Nazira

Chief minister Tarun Gogoi’s language card to win the by polls in three Barak valley constituencies continues to draw protest across the state.The Brihottar Asomiya Youva Mancha in Nazira burnt the effigy of Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi on Thursday in protest against his recent circular on the official language.Led by BAYM president Ranjan Mahanta, over 200 activists thronged the Nazira town and burnt Gogoi effigy apart from shouting slogans against the government.

AASU dharna before ONGC in Nazira

The All Assam Students Union in Nazira staged dharna on Monday demanding immediate construction of the proposed 300 bedded Super speciality hospital in Demow. Over 1000 AASU activists thronged ONGC’s Assam Asset office main gate to reiterate the demand. The oil and gas giant announced the Rs 1,00 crore hospital at Rajabari in Demow. Later the protestors submitted a memorendum to the ONGC CMD through the Executive Director asking the PSU to listen to the demand. During the UPA regime, then petroleum minister M Veerappa Moily laid the foundation stone last year. But the things have not progressed further.

Illegal coal depots running in Nazira

Defying Supreme Court directives, Illegal coal tradings are going on in Nazira without any hindrance. Behind this illegal tradings are a section of police officials who have been aiding and abetting the dishonest traders to carry out the dirty deals in coal. The power circle has been remaining active in Lashmija, Bihubor, Gelakey along with a few other places in Nazira sub division. A number of coal depots has allegedly been running in the full knowledge of the district administration along the Assam-Nagaland border areas under the patronage of a circle of powerful politicians who have been helping police and traders. Simaluguri girl commits suicide

An 18 years old girl commited suicide in Nazira sending shock wave across the entire area on Sunday. Identified as Suchila Nayak, she committed suicide at Simaluguri on Saturday night. She worked as a helper at the residence of Dr.Prabin Konwar for the last couple of months. Her father Subu Nayak of Lakuw Rangagarah has lodged a complaint at the Simaluguri police station . The reason of the extreme step was not known.

Animal husbandry training in Nazira

The Nazira Pragati organised a day long training on animal husbandry which evoked encouraging response from the local residents on Saturday. Sivasagar KVK specialist Dr.Rofikul Islam conducted the training to be participated by over 30 local residents. Dr Islam focused the viability and commercial farming of poltary, pigary, goatery etc.
