On 22nd January, a local court in Imphal ordered the release of Irom Sharmila by regarding the charge of "attempt to suicide" as baseless. However, Irom Sharmila has been re-arrested again and has been booked under the same charge of "attempt to suicide" under 309 IPC.
Save Sharmila Solidarity Campaign (SSSC), a nation-wide campaign in support of Irom Sharmila and againstAFSPA, condemns the re-arrest. SSSC considers this re-arrest of Irom Sharmila as a mockery of judiciary by the state. While the judiciary had released her by quashing the charges of "attempt to suicide", the state has re-arrested her on the same grounds.
SSSC believes that it is a failure of state to resolve the issue of AFSPA and it is making Sharmila, a victim of state. At this time when few days ago, even the government said that it is considering the decriminalization of the 309 IPC, it seems that the state functionaries are trying to get the benefit till the time the government decriminalises it.
SSSC appeals with Govt of India to intervene in the issue and to order immediate release of Sharmila. It also appeals that immediate steps should be taken to repeal AFSPA, the cause for which Irom Sharmila is protesting.
AFSPA must be removed in view of large scale human rights violations. Even the state leadership of present ruling party in Central govt had favored in repealing of this act. The state unit of BJP had promised the repeal of AFSPA during the elections.
SSSC has organised and is continuing its efforts to highlight the issue and struggle of people in AFSPA imposed areas. SSSC has also sent letters and delegations to various authorities and appealed them to repeal this act, however SSSC is determined to initiative a major movement in coming days to protest against this act.

This is outrageous and illegal. She has every right to protest especially against a draconian act which allows armed forces to illegally carry on many illegal activities from within these areas without having to be accountable.It is a known fact that the lapses and corruption in the armed forces leads to much rise in security threat to the State and the nation. Many arms and drugs smugglers pay the army personnel and get through easily. the Secret funds in name of fighting terrorism is all in name when they (armed forces) know who is behind all the terror being bred and funded. Common man cannot fund and protect terrorism. It is the high and the mighty .. We the Civil Society Women Organization(CSWO) Meghalaya, demand that the AFSPA be repealed and flush out the corrupt in the armed forces and clean the mess as the people should not be made scapegoats, unless the whole Indian Army fears one Iron Lady.
Intellectuals, journalists and a section of senior citizens staged dharna in front of the NEDFi Bhawan on Thusday boycotting a NHPC-sponsored seminar on the proposed big dams in Gerukamukh. The brief silence is over. BTAD areas seem to have erupted in violence forcing the authority to clamp curfew on Thursday. Violence took its worse turn during the 24 hour lower Assam bandh on Wednesday demanding exclusion of Non Boro areas from BTAD. A string of group clashes marred the bandh call leaving two dead and several others injured. The clashes broke out in Baska when a group of people forced some shops to open. These have forced the administration to step up security in the entire Baska district.
Assam on Wednesday again pledged to give a brave fight against terrorism---of all forms when the state remembered with deep grief those died in the October 30 serial blast five years back. Participating at a tributery function under the Ganesguri flyover, chief minister Tarun Gogoi urged the people to stand united against terrorism. Hundreds of people led by Gogoi paid floral tributes to the departed victims in Ganesguri, Panbazar, Bongaigaon and Kokrajhar. Bad news for nature lovers. A wild elephant found dead of electrocution on Tuesday night. The tragic incident took place at Sonari in Sivasagar at night when a heard of wild elephants came to the are in quest io search of food. A small group of these elephant came to Joboka tea estate where the incident took place. The carcass was spotted in the morning. But it took nearly 5 hours for the forest officials to reach the spot.
After a brief lull, violence erupts again in BTAD areas. A protest in the form of 24 hour Assam bandh called by the no Bodos demanding their safety turned violent on Wednesday wee hours. Despite a beefed up security measures, bandh supporters set on fire a truck in Gossaigaon on the road. Three persons were killed and atleast 20 others have been injured when a passenger bus collided its head on a tanker in Nagaon district. The incident took place on the National Highway 37 in Roha at 2 am, where a Guwahati bound passenger bus from Tinsukia collided head on a standred tanker. Crucial document relating to transaction of several crores along dozens personal computers have been ravaged when the Dispur branch of Canara Bank caught fire on Sunday. The fire broke out at 2pm and fire tenderpr arrived in the spot as soon as the smoke were seen bellowing from the first floor of the bank beside the Ganesguri flyover. The opposition Asom Gana Parishad has given a 12 hour bandh call on Monday in protest against the Congress government's failure to deal with price rise and law and order breakdown. AGP leaders told assamtimes that the statewide bandh would come into force from 5 on Monday morning to end at 5 in the evening. On the other hand, the opposition party has exempted the essential services.
Chief minister Tarun Gogoi on Saturday reviewed the state's law and order situation at a meeting with top police and civil officials. Immediately after arriving in Guwahati, the chief minister invited IGP SN Singh and chief secretary Jitesh Khosla.
