On 22nd January, a local court in Imphal ordered the release of Irom Sharmila by regarding the charge of "attempt to suicide" as baseless. However, Irom Sharmila has been re-arrested again and has been booked under the same charge of "attempt to suicide" under 309 IPC.  

Save Sharmila Solidarity Campaign (SSSC), a nation-wide campaign in support of Irom Sharmila and against AFSPA, condemns the re-arrest. SSSC considers this re-arrest of Irom Sharmila as a mockery of judiciary by the state. While the judiciary had released her by quashing the charges of "attempt to suicide", the state has re-arrested her on the same grounds. 

SSSC believes that it is a failure of state to resolve the issue of AFSPA and it is making Sharmila, a victim of state. At this time when few days ago, even the government said that it is considering the decriminalization of the 309 IPC, it seems that the state functionaries are trying to get the benefit till the time the government decriminalises it.

SSSC appeals with Govt of India to intervene in the issue and to order immediate release of Sharmila. It also appeals that immediate steps should be taken to repeal AFSPA, the cause for which Irom Sharmila is protesting.

AFSPA must be removed in view of large scale human rights violations. Even the state leadership of present ruling party in Central govt had favored in repealing of this act. The state unit of BJP had promised the repeal of AFSPA during the elections. 

SSSC has organised and is continuing its efforts to highlight the issue and struggle of people in AFSPA imposed areas. SSSC has also sent letters and delegations to various authorities and appealed them to repeal this act, however SSSC is determined to initiative a major movement in coming days to protest against this act.

This is outrageous and illegal. She has every right to protest especially against a draconian act which allows armed forces to illegally carry on many illegal activities from within these areas without having to be accountable.It is a known fact that the lapses and corruption in the armed forces leads to much rise in security threat to the State and the nation. Many arms and drugs smugglers pay the army personnel and get through easily. the Secret funds in name of fighting terrorism is all in name when they (armed forces) know who is behind all the terror being bred and funded. Common man cannot fund and protect terrorism. It is the high and the mighty .. We the Civil Society Women Organization(CSWO) Meghalaya, demand that the AFSPA be repealed and flush out the corrupt in the armed forces and clean the mess as the people should not be made scapegoats, unless the whole Indian Army fears one Iron Lady.

Naidu lashes out a Cong

Former BJP president M Venkiah Naidu said that BJP will be able to form the government at the Centre after gaining absolute majority in the upcoming Lok Sabha polls.Addressing a press conference in Guwahati on Wednesday, he said that Narendra Modi was indomitable and that’s why, the ruling party is scared of him. He said that the UPA is a gang of thieves who have looted the country with a number of huge scams.

BJP’s stock-taking meet

Central BJP leaders are on a day long visit to Guwahati to take stock of the poll preparations. Former party president M Venkaiah Naidu and SS Ahluwaliah held a close door meeting with senior state unit party leaders at the Hotel Rajmahal and discuss the state of poll preparations.The meeting is further believed to have discussed the poll candidates in a number of seats. State unit president Sarbananda Sonowal along with the sitting MPs attended the meeting.         

Dharna in Delhi against Akhil arrest

Hundreds of Delhi University students staged dharna n New Delhi on Wednesday demanding immediate release of Akhil Gogoi who was remanded to judicial custody a few days BJP.Award winning prolific writer Arundhoti Roy also joined the dharna organized by KMSS student wing in protest against the arrest of Gogoi in connection with a  self immolation case of a KMSS activist in Dispur on February 24.

Gogoi ups ante on Modi

We have nothing to hide. We will publish white paper on the assistance to the state by both UPA and NDA  governments. This was what chief minister Tarun Gogoi told reporters on Wednesday.Addressing a press conference at Rajiv Bhawan on Wednesday, Gogoi said that the things in Narendra Modi have exposed gradually.“Modi tea is an insult to Assam and its people,” said the chief minister. He called BJP a one man show party.

Gogoi confident of 10 seats

Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi is confident that Congress will get more than 10 seats in the upcoming Lok Sabbha polls.Addressing a press conference at Rajiv Bhawan on Wednesday, Gogoi said that voters were aware of the performance of the UPA government which was much better than NDA.“Nobody can stop us putting up a good show in the polls this time slated for April 7, 12, and 24.    

CM denies dissidence

Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi straightly denied any dissidence within the party legislators.Addressing a press conference at Rajiv Bhawan on Wednesday, Gogoi said that all legislators would help the party ensure a commendable performance in the election.He said that difference among the party legislators are not new in a huge ruling party. But only to be kept in abeyance. He said that he has given the legislators chances to air their grievances.He said that Dr Himanta Biswa Sarma convened a meeting of a section of his colleagues at his residence on Tuesday evening only after taking his ascent.

AGP finalizing candidates

AGP is holding its steering committee meeting in Guwahati on Wednesday to finalise the candidates for the upcoming Lok Sabha polls.Party leaders told Assam Times that presided over by President Prafullla Kumar Mahanta at the Ambari-based party headquarters, the crucial meeting have already finalized the names of 10 candidates.“Other candidates would be finalized towards the evening,” said a senior party leader. But the party unanimously has decided to go it alone in the Lok sabha polls.              

EC reviews poll preparedness

Chief Election Commissioner VS Sampath is on a day long visit to Guwahati to take stock of the preparation for the upcoming Lok Sabha polls slated for April 7, 12 and 24.Sampath is reviewing the entire poll preparations with the deputy commissioners along with the superintendents of police at the Khanapara Administrative Staff College from 10-30 in the morning.This stock-taking meeting would be followed by his meeting with Chief Secretary JS Kholsa, DGP Khagen Sarma along with state’s election commissioner.Apart from this, the full fledged commission is scheduled to hold a crucial meeting with the political parties to discuss the model code of conduct which is in force.
