What ails Barpeta jute cultivators
All is not well for Sarbesh Ali. Jute cultivation will no longer be his staple source of livelihood. Same fate awaits Mofesh Ali. He won’t be able to reap rich harvest this year. This is what the major cause of worry for at least 55 families in Kohora pother area in Barpeta.
Jute cultivation covers over 100 bighas in the entire area. The seven month long hard work yields results Rs 10,000 income per bighas after selling in Howly and Barpeta Road markets.
“But this time we are worried over the poor show. Our cost stands Rs 5,000 per bigha. This time we will get only around Rs 6,000,” said Sabesh Ali.
He told Assam Times, “whatever money we had with us have been spent in jute cultivation. Now we are quite unable to think of an alternative.”
A visibly upset Mofesh Ali said,”our worries could have been avoided had we receive any support from the government.”
He said that despite repeated request no minister or MLA have come to take stock of the situation. “We would have no option but to leave jute cultivation if this state of affairs continues,” said another jute cultivator.
This time jute cultivators in this huge area did not fare well in the face of an inclement weather which would be a big blow for the cultivators who have been living from hand to mouth from it. Will the government blink?
