A US team is on a visit to Assam to find out the mortal remains of their four soldiers who died in air crash during the World War II. Led by David Gooch, the team under the banner of Joint Prisoners of War/Missing in Action Accounting Command is visiting Sivasagar district.
The focus of attention is a tiny village in Charaideo where the US team along with the officials of archeological survey of India is searching the remains of the US soldiers. The team starts search operation from Wednesday till November 5. The mortal remains, if found, would be handed over to the family members.
The crash took place on June 26 in 1944 when the US war plane crashed with eleven soldiers in Kothiakhunda village. Bodies of seven soldiers were recovered. Four others were left out because of an unavoidable circumstances.

The US Government is currently working with Rimo Expeditions to recover the mortal remains of four crewmen still missing from the crash of the US Army Air Force B-29 bomber "Eileen", which crashed in Assam's Sivasagar district on 26 June 1944. The missing airmen are 2nd Lt. Walter B. Miklosh of Illinois, Flight Officer Chester L. Rinke of Michigan, S/Sgt. Donal C. Aiken of Washington state, and T/Sgt. John M. Larkins of Tennessee (sources: C. M. Quinn, The Aluminum Trail (1989), National World War II Memorial). We pray that their remains will be recovered and returned to their families. Two person were killed and two others have been injured in a road mishap in Jorhat district on Friday. The mishap took place early in the morning on the National Highway at Koliapani when a speeding dumper knocked down four persons who were walking. Two died on the spot while two others including a minor boy have been injured. The deceased were identified as Shiva Kurmi and Madhab Gogoi. The dumper managed to flee from the spot.
Rhino poaching refuses to halt in Kaziranga. Poachers have killed yet another rhino in the famed Kaziranga National Park. The incident took place on Thursday night at the Burhapahar range. Hearing sounds of shooting forest gaurds launched an operation where an encounter took place. The poachers were believed to have left the spot even after killing a full grown rhino. The body was spotted at a water body in the wee hours. The horn was found intact. With this, the total number of rhinos killed in Kaziranga has gone up to 35.
Yet another gruesome twin murder case sent anger and shockwave across the state where two girls were raped and murdered near the Borjhar airport. The entire sensational case came to light when police interrogated the driver and owner of a car after it was found abandoned near the railline. After marathan interrogation, the driver confessed that he along two others killed two girls and the bodies were broght in the vehicle to be dumped at a waterbody beside of the rail line. One semi naked body was found on Thursday while the another was found in the hours on Friday. Those arrested include Nripen Das, Kishore Das....drivers and the owner of the vehicle Gopal Barman.
Assam chief minister Tarun Gogoi's son Gaurav married Elizabeth Colburn, an English girl at a high profile wedding ceremony in Delhi where traditional Ahome formalities were observed on Wednesday night. Elizabeth's father handed over his daughter following the traditional Ahom chaklong formalities performed by a group of moulung headed by Dr Jogen Phukan at Sunheribag. Despite treatment her condition deteriorated. Then blood test cofirmed it a dengue case. The family members took h er to the hospital. But she died on the way to the hospital.

Normal rail traffic remains disrupted after six oil tanker bogies of a goods train derailed in Dima Hasao district on Tuesday.The accident took place in between Harengajao and Migrandisa in the district.According to the Northeast Frontier Railway, the tankers carrying petroleum products jumped the tracks in the morning on the Lumding-Badarpur section. The engine of the train was not damaged as the tankers were six bogies behind it. However, none was injured.It has disrupted movement of trains, including Agartala-Lumding Express, Barak Valley Express and other local trains at different places.
Police have finally released Akhil Gogoi 10 hours after the KMSS leader was picked up for staging dharna in front of CJM court in Guwahati.Flanked by hundreds of his supporters, Gogoi staged dharna opposing anticipatory bail to businessmen Suresh Prithani, Ramavtar Burhakiya and Sanjoy Lohia who have allegedly misused hectres of plots on Guwahati and the adjoining areas alloted to them for business purpose. Violence refuses to recede in Goalpara district in the name of protest against Rabha Hasong Autonomous Council polls. Protesters on Monday set on fire a lower primary school at Puthimari during the bandh called by the Garo National Council and 10 non-Rabha organisations.Two mini buses and a car were also set ablaze in Kasomari and Torangthap area. The bandh called from 5am on Sunday affected normal life in the Garo and non-Rabha areas of the district. The Council polls are slated for three phases between November 13 and 25.
