Release Jaiklong: HC to govt

Finally, Jaiklong Brahma won thanks to the judiciary who found it illegal to book the Kokrajhar based journalist under the National Security Act. In a major blow for the Assam government, the Gauhati High Court has ordered immediate release of Jaiklong Brahma who has been languishing in jail for the last one month after he was arrested from Kokrajhar.

Citing several legal lacunae in the detention order, a division bench of the court on Wednesday quashed the detention order of the Kokrajhar journalist who was arrested charging him with hobnobbing with a militant outfit.

The court directed the government to release the scribe who works with a Guwahati based news channel, if there is no pending case against him. The varuous parties, organizations and indivdual have welcomed the high court judgement as soon as the verdict was cleared.

IED recovered in Kakopothar

In another incident, police recovered two Improvised Explosive Devices (IED) from the kitchen garden of a house in Hahakati area under Kakopothar police station in Tinsukia district. The IEDs were buried in the garden.  Police said the IEDs, each weighing around five kg, were recovered following a tip-off. The owner of the house, Biswajit Moran, has been picked up for questioning.

Youth killed in Tinsukia firing

Security forces claimed to have killed an ULFA militant in Tinsukia district  on Saturday. Identified as Lalit Moran, the local youth was suspected to be a militant belonging to the anti-talk faction during a joint operation launched by the Army and police in Duwarmara jungle. Army and police had launched the operation after getting intelligence input regarding the presence of a group of armed men in the area.  But a section of local resident alleged it a fake encounter where the innocent youth was killed.

Aaranyak has expressed its deep concern at the continued poaching of rhinos in different parts of Assam. NFAI restores 9th Assamese film Runumi
