New Delhi: The Centre finetunes a slew of measures to ensure essential supply for the north eastern region following the damage of the Lumding-Badarpur railway network. Also immediate steps are there to restore the network.
The Prime Minister’s Office on Wednesday morning assessed the situation and issues instructions to the ministries of railways, food and public distribution, petroleum, road transport, home to ensure the supply of essential commodities in the region.
Convened by the PMO, Principal Secretary to the Prime Minister, T K A Nair, Assam revenue minister Dr Bhumidhar Barman and key officials of the concerned ministries attended the meeting.
The Assam Government informs that there are sufficient stocks of essential commodities, including foodgrains, petroleum products and other items, and there is no cause for any alarm.
Officials with the Food Corporation of India (FCI) and the Indian Oil Corporation (IOC) assured Dispur of steady flow of foodgrains and petroleum products in the region.
Mr Nair directed asked the officials in the meeting to identify the alternative route for movement of goods round the clock saying the Border Roads Organisation (BRO) and the National Highway Authority of India (NHAI) should set up control centers on the identified highways.
He instructed Railways officials to put in place necessary transshipment, both for freight and passenger movement in consultation with the Assam government.
The meeting further instructs Assam Police and BRO to conduct adequate checks to rule out overloading by transporters so that potential damage to bridges is avoided.
Notably, on Tuesday, heavy industries and public enterprises minister Santosh Mohan Dev called on the Prime Minister and apprised him of the damage of the bridge and the need for taking immediate action to avoid any disruption in the flow of essential commodities to Assam and other neighbouring states.
