Expert stresses water quality management

A round table conference in Guwahati on extraction of natural resources in the north east stressed the role of the civil societies in maintaining water quality to avoid health and environment hazard.

Participating in the conference sponsored by the Assam Times on Thursday, expert Chandan Mahanta said that the need of the hour is a preventive environment management in the north east.

According to him, the rivers in the region are not at all healthy. Contaminated river water increases cancer risk among the people if the rising cancer cases are to be believed.

Moreover, the people in Majuli have been using contaminated waters, he said citing a study conducted a couple of years back. He said that the water treatment plants alone cannot help the region maintain good quality of potable water.

He stressed the involvement of civil society organizations in water quality management by sharing technology and methodology.
