State gears up for National Games

Only three months are left. Preparations are afoot to hold the 36th National Games in Kerala. The Assam contingent is gearing up to steal the show.

Official sources told Assam Times that the government has earmarked Rs 1 crore for the preparations. Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi announced it at a meeting with representatives of the Assam Olympic Association recently.

The arrangement of coaching of various disciplines at one place would help build team spirit and enhance performance level.

The meeting unanimously decided to hold the State Games at Silchar in February next year.

For encouraging sportspersons from Assam suitable incentives would be extended to the players who had taken part in the 2011 National Games in Jharkhand.

Gogoi said the state government would bear the to and fro air expenses also to those players not among the medal winners to enable them to take part in the upcoming Asian Games.

The 36th National Games would be held between January 31 and February 14 in Kerala.
