Cashew nut cartel!

After egg, betel leaf, fish and meat, now it’s the cartel of cashew nuts that makes the fruit more dearer for common people these days.

Some sensational revelations have come out during the investigation by the Assam Times.

A part of the cartel has been remaining active in Fancy Bazar area where Shanti Lal, Manoj Moore and Sunil Bothra have already stopped the rush of cashew nuts from outside. Cashew nuts procured from Mancachar are available in the Guwahati markets these days.

The trio have been running this cartel under the patronage of a powerful circle of people in Dispur which is why, these people have been maintaining a studied silence on the allegations of this dirty deal in cashew nuts.

Its strange to note. Raw cashew nut is available at Rs 65 per 2 KG while the price of a dressed cashew nut is available at Rs 480 per kg (If 2 kg raw cashew nut are required to get 1 KG of dressed cashew nut).

The raw cashew nuts procured from Garo hills are processed in Mancachar by the industries run by Dilip Bothra and Mahesh Agarwalla.

The workers are allegedly underpaid where they get Rs 50 for processing cashew nut per kilo in addition to Rs 20 for electricity charge.

With 20 percent benefit for the traders, the cashew nuts should have been available at a price not more than Rs 250.

But the cashew nut price stands at Rs 480 per KG only because of the cartel where Mancachar MLA Javed Islam mires in controversy.

According to allegation, the dissident MLA has been patronizing the entire cartel of cashew nuts with tacit support from a section of officials from the Dhubri administration.

It take about 4 kg of raw cashew to get 1 kg of the processed cashew nut which is being sold in the market. The investment in raw material is high, and also the rate of raw cashew reaches to about 80-100 kg during the off season. Hence, the prices are high.

Assamese girl raped in MP; 6 held

 Yet another minor girl was raped after she was taken away to Madhya Pradesh assuring her of a comfortable job where six persons including a state BJP leaders have been arrested.  The incident came to light on Thursday evening during a police routine checking on Ujjain road. Major flood awaits Lakhimpur, Dhemaji

 Flood waters are likely to wreak havoc in Lakhimpur and Dhemaji districts again if the rise in the water level of the Subansiri river is any indication. There has been sudden and steep rise in the water level the river in Arunachal Pradesh for the last couple of hours on Friday posing serious threat to the two districts. The river is flowing 7 metre above the danger level and if this alarming trend continues, a huge flood wave is likely to wash away Lakhimpur and Dhemaji districts within the next 12 hours. Blockade hikes prices in Golaghat

One after another problems seem to have crushed the spine of the common people in Golaghat these days. A section of businessmen in this trouble torn district has hiked the prices of the essential commodities to make the people bear the brunt of the blockades against Nagaland. The district authorities relaxed the indefinite curfew on Friday to help the common people buy essential items. But strangely, the people, mostly, found it difficult to buy the essential commodities at an exorbitant rate alleging halt of surface communication for the last couple of days.

CM meeting protesters

In a bid to restore peace and normalcy in Golaghat district chief minister Tarun Gogoi is holding a meeting with a delegation of the seven organizations in Dispur on Friday. Facilitated by PWD minister Ajanta Neog, the AJYCP, KMSS and ATTSA representatives are attending the chief minister’s meeting at 12 noon.

Curfew reimposed in Golaghat

 Curfew reimposed in parts Golaghat on Friday after six hours of relaxation from 6 in the morning. People in the trouble torn district came out of their homes for shopping after three days of bandhs and blockades in the time of border flare up. Schools and colleges are remaining closed while the government offices registered hardly any attendance. Security forces are patrolling on the streets. Public places in the vulnerable pockets are being heavily guarded to prevent the gathering of people. If the situation continues to improve, the authorities are likely to relaxed curfew for 12 hours on Saturday morning.       

Joint mechanism to defuse tension

A joint mechanism would be devised to defuse the Assam-Nagaland border tension. This was simple what Union Minister of State for Home Kiren Rijiju told reporters after meeting Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi and his Nagaland counterpart in Guwahati on Thursday. Before leaving for Golaghat, Rijiju said that the senior officials from both states will meet frequently at a designated place so that no lapses occur in future. Statewide bandh ends

The AGP-sponsored 12 hour statewide bandh ended as soonas the clock struck 5 in the evening. Backed by atleast 13 organizations, the bandh was total to be marred by a few untoward incidents. Bandh supporters in many districts blocked the movement of vehicles by burning tyres while they vandalized many shops in some places. Shops and markets, schools and colleges, banks and offices remained closed under the impact of the bandh. In Guwahati, ASTC was running its buses causing immense inconvenience for the commuters. The bandh was called in protest against the police firing in Golaghat on Tuesday and Wednesday where three killed and several others sustained injury. //

5 injured in Numligarh protest

At least five persons including a policeman sustained injury in Golaghat district in a fresh clash between security forces and protesters Thursday. The clash erupted in Numligharh when protestors in large number blocked the National Highway. A section of protesters threw stones at police vehicles forcing the security forces to resort to blank firing apart from bursting tear gas shells to disperse protesters. /

End violence with talks: Sarkar

Tripura Chief Minister Manik Sarkar has appealed to Assam and Nagaland chief ministers to amicably settle the issue of border disturbance through dialogue. Talking to reporters in Guwahati after attending the north east chief minister’s meeting on Thursday, Sarkar said the presence of central force may be helpful in this regard. So presence of central force and effective intervention and management is needed from their the Centre’s side. According to him, the Assam and Nagaland chief ministers should persuade their people to think in a proper manner and sort out the differences.
