Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi pins hopes on a Rs 1,450 crore central fund for infrastructure development in10 state universities.
The fund would also be utilized to set up the proposed women varsity in the state. Gogoi raised the demands when he met Union Human Resource Development Minister Smriti Irani in New Delhi on Tuesday.
According to official sources, Gogoi sought a special incentive package for development of higher education and adequate funding for promotion of literacy and education in the state.
Apart from seeking a special incentive package to boost the higher education sector by attracting private investments, Gogoi underlined the need of central funding for filling up of vacant posts of teachers in the schools to maintain the student-teacher ratio in the state.
Gogoi also urged Irani to facilitate establishment of an Indian Institute of Management (IIM) in Guwahati.
He further stressed importance of cooperative management education in the state and underscored the need of support of the Central government to develop Assam Rajiv Gandhi University of Cooperative Management.
