Sarbhog tense after shops set on fire

An uneasy calm seems to have been prevailing in Barpeta district after unidentified miscreants set on fire at least 15 business establishments on Thursday.

The incident took place at Sorbhog area in the wee hours the miscreants burnt down 10 shops in Chahpur area while the same group of miscreants set on fire 5 other shops in Pampara area.

Some of the miscreants further burnt down a cowshed and a heap of straw in the area.

Police officials have arrived in the spot and the investigation is going on.
A section of the local residents told Assam Times that it might be an effort to spread the BTAD violence.  

The incident assumes significance after miscreants killed at least 45 people and burnt down over 70 houses in the adjoining BTAD areas last week.

In yet another bizarre incident that sends shockwaves across the state, a farmer couple committed suicide in Barpeta district after poisoning their 2 children on Sunday. The incident took place in the Sarthebari area where caught in grim poverty the couple poisoned to death their children and then hanged themselves in the evening. Local residents blamed poverty which forced them to take this extreme course of action. The incident took place a month after a poor farmer took the same course of action when flood waves ravaged his crops.

Three persons who sustained serious injury in Barpeta lightening on Saturday are battling for life at the Gauhati Medical College Hospital.At least fifteen others have been undergoing treatment at the Barpeta Medical College Hospital who are out of danger. The boat carrying more than 50 people was caught in a storm in the middle of the river Beki where the lightening struck on it leaving seven people died on the spot.
