Waiting for Rahul Gandhi

Amid a massive security arrangement, people thronging in thousands in Biswanath Chariali to attend Rahul Gandhi’s rally on Monday.

Security forces are fanning across the district to thwart any move by NDFB-S militants to disrupt Gandhi’s poll rally to campaign for Tezpur party candidate Bhupen Bora.

Senior party leaders told Assam Times that security forces are guarding hundreds of buses deployed by the party to ferry people to the rally at the Kamala Kanta Khetra.

Gandhi is scheduled to arrive in Tezpur at 11 in the morning. Then he would straightly leave for Biswanath Charilai to hold the rally. He would fly to Dibrugarh at 1-30 in the afternoon.      

Massive security arrangement is required in the entire district in view of NDFB-S militants’ 12 hour bandh to oppose Rahul Gandhi’s visit.

Rahul's rally in Assam is equally important. He has been strength of congress party and he has given its party a breakthrough. His efforts were transformed into actions.

One can see that Rahul Gandhi's popularity is rising day by day. He is very much popular among the young generation and also among the people at the grassroot level. He is putting good efforts in reaching out to people.

Oil well explodes in Sivasagar

Fear and panic seem to have struck Sivasagar town after an explosion at an oil well on Thursday.The explosion took place with a huge sound in the wee hours at the Oil Well NO 14 in Rudrasagar resulting in speedy emission of gas in the entire area. The explosion is believed to have taken place due to technical snag.Senior civil, police and ONGC officials arrived on the spot and started evacuating the local residents to ensure their safety. Hundreds of panic-stricken people in the area are leaving their homes from early in the morning. ONGC experts are trying to bring the situation under control.

ONGC faces protest

Local residents in the Rudrasagar area near the Sivasagar town blame it all on the ONGC authority for the explosion in the oil well on Thursday.They told Assam Times that they have been demanding withdrawal of the oil well from the thickly populated area. But the authorities have been downplaying the demands.“Had it been withdrawn earlier, this situation would not have taken place today,” said Nishant Bora who is leading a group of people to gherao the ONGC authorities.

Blockade against Arunachal

Surface communication between Assam and Arunachal Pradesh has come to a grinding halt from Thursday following the indefinite economic blockade in Bihali in protest against the firing incident at Chauldhuwa.Local residents in large number blocked the roads leading to the neeighbouring state disrupting the supply of essential commodities from early in the morning. Trucks carrying commodities to Itanagar town are remaining stranded on the road under the impact of the blockade.Talking to Assam Times, protestors said that they won’t leave the blockade until and unless the miscreants are brought to book. If the blockade is allowed to continue the neighbouring state would have to bear the brunt....

Escalating tension in Bihali

Tension seems to have escalated further along the Assam-Arunachal Pradesh border a day after at least ten people have been killed in miscreants’ firing at Chauldhuwa.Security forces are fanning in the nook and corner of the entire area to flush out the miscreants who started indiscriminate firing at a forest camp manned by around 400 people to prevent encroachment by the Arunachalese miscreants. Top ranked police and civil officials are camping in the area to strictly deal with further eventualities.

Bihali: Govt faces wrath

The Assam government comes in for sharp criticism for the bloodbath in Bihali a day after at least 10 people were shot dead by Arunachalese militants.Local residents told Assam Times that for the last several years they have been demanding security forces to prevent unabated encroachment by a section of the people from the neighbouring state. But only to go unheard. “We won’t allow it to happen. We will stop this encroachment. But government won’t help us,” rued Akhilesh Munda who was also present at the camp when the firing took place in Chauldhuwa.AGP, BJP squarely condemned the incident and in the same breath the opposition parties criticized the government for remaining a mute spectator...

Opp whip to MLAs

AGP, BJP and AIUDF have formally asked party legislators to vote for the consensus candidate in the upcoming Rajya Sabha polls.The legislators are in the receipt of formal instructions from the party leaderships. In view of the lack of numbers, Congress have no option but to take resort to horse trading to ensure the victory of the three candidates.    

LS candidates’ list soon

AICC screening committee is set to finalise the list of Lok Sabha poll candidates in a day or two. The final list is being finalized by committee chairman and Union home minister Sushil Kumar Shinde in presence of Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi and APCC president Bhubneswar Kalita.The prepared list would be handed over to Sonia Gandhi for seal of approval in a day or two. Hope on independent MLAs

In a set back for the opposition consensus candidate Haidor Hussain, independent MLA Jatin Mali made it plain on Wednesday that he would vote for the ruling party candidate.He is believed to have decided not to vote for the AGP-sponsored candidate in the Rajya Sabha polls slated for February 7. Two other independent legislators are also expected to vote for the ruling party candidates.        

10 killed in border firing

At least ten people were killed and over 20 have been injured in indiscriminate firing by miscreants along Assam-Arunachal Pradesh border in Sonitpur district on Wednesday.The incident took place at Chauldhua area in the afternoon when miscreants from the neighboring state started indiscriminate firing on a camp of a group of local residents to prevent aggression by a section of Arunachalese.    The firing continued for several hours and security forces rushed to the spot only in the evening. The injured have been rushed to the hospital in the evening only.But unconfirmed sources told Assam Times that the toll might go up as the sound of firing from the side of Arunachal...
