Karbi festival going on

With much fanfare and cultural extravaganza, the colourful Karbi Youth festival is going on atop the Karbi hills. The colourful cultural event of the Karbi youths was inaugurated by Assam Governor Lt general (retd) Ajoy Singh on Saturday. The event marked its beginning with a glowing tribute to the Karbi culture legend Rangsina Sarpo. In his address, the Governor said he was really mesmerized by the Karbi songs and dance adding that has turned 75 but never did he enjoy these cultural festival. In his address, veteran Karbi political leader Dr Jayanta Rongpi said only autonomous state could restore permanent peace and prosperity in the hills district.

Saw Assam Times for the first time today and found this piece of news on Karbi youth Festival. The effort to host a people's paper is really praiseworthy. I am definitely one of your many well-wishers and would be glad to see this effort grow everyday. Since you have given a reader this unique opportunity to also comment on the news items appearing here, I would only suggest to kindly get the names (particularly Karbi and other tribal names) correctly. For example, the name of Rangsina Sarpo is written in this news item as Sargot..which is wrong and I hope you wouldn't want to go on unmindful of such mistakes! Please kindly ask your reporters to be cautious on such sensitive matters. With best wishes.....DST

Assam register big win in N E Challenge hockey

Assam thrashed Tripura 6-0 in their inaugural match of the first N E Challenge Cup Hockey Tournamnt which got under way at the Md Tayabulla Hockey stadium on Sunday. GUWAHATI: The cricket season of the state will get under way with the S P Barooah Cricket Tournament, which will begin at Railway stadium, Maligaon, from October two. Kaziranga Reopening to be delayed this year

Kaziranga National Park (KNP) has lost a total of 44 animals in the three floods in 2007, starting from June 19, July 27 and September 5. However, in the first wave of floods no animal had died. Applications invited for GNRC media fellowship

Guwahati: Applications from competent reporter-journalists are invited for the 3rd GNRC media fellowship 2007-08 to study the healthcare scenario in Northeast India. The three-month long fellowship, conceived by Dr NC Borah, CMD of GNRC hospital and implemented with the help of Guwahati Press Club, is open to all mid-career journalists based in the region.
