BK Handique files nomination

Jorhat Congress candidate Bijoy Krishna Handique filed his nomination papers on Wednesday.

Flanked by senior party leaders, the fourth time MP filed his nomination before the returning officer at 11-30 in the morning.

Earlier, Congress workers took Handique to the DC office premises in Jorhat with a procession.

Two Assam government officers were sentenced to seven years Rigorous Imprisonment for their involvement in the PDS rice scam.Tinsukia Chief Judicial Magistrate N S Deori sentenced former Kakopathar Block Development Officer Alizur Rehman Bora and Extension Officer Kshitij Kakati to seven years RI along with a fine of Rs 50,000 each. The duo were convicted for selling PDS rice, meant to be sold to BPL section at Rs two, at Rs 12-14 in 2007.
The All Bodo Students’ Union finally ended its indefinite hunger strike with lemon water from the hands of Mangalsing Narzary.The decision was taken after the Centre invited them for tripartite talks on September 4. At least 40 people have fallen ill after consuming food at a religious function near Hajo in Kamrup district on Saturday. The individual religious  function took place at a house on Friday night. After the puja, the invitees consumed 'prasad' and started complaining of uneasiness. Over 40 people suffered from vomiting and loose motion. Altogether 10 persons have been released from the hospital while 30 others are undergoing treatment.

Atleast nine persons including four journalists sustained injury when ULFA exploded a powerful grenade in Mongoldoi on Thursday. The explosion took place with a huge sound leaving 9 people injured. They include 2 policemen and 4 journalists who were covering the function.The injured have been rushed to the hospital. Hours after the attack, the insurgent outfit owned up the responsibilty of the incident.
