Pathak killer held

In a major breakthrough into the Rajib Pathak killing case, security forces claimed to have captured the main culprit behind the broad day light killing of the irrigation department engineer in Haflong. Haflong police and Army's Madras Regiment jawans held Imranjit Bathari alias Aeroplane Dimasa during a joint operation at SS Road in Mahur on Tuesday evening. Bathari was the armedman who shot dead Pathak at his office chamber a few days after Pathak joined as executive engineer of the irrigation department.

Sonowal's date with Zeliang

GUWAHATI: Nagaland Chief Minister TR Zeliang and his Assam counterpart Sarbananda Sonowal has met his Assam counterpart Sarbananda Sonowal have agreed to formulate a slew of strategies to move the Centre to improve connectivity network in the north eastern region. The duo met in Guwahati on Monday where they discussed a common strategy for a connectivity boost. New Industrial Policy for North East region in line with Act East Policy and means to meet mounting employment problem in the region also figured in the meeting.


 They agreed that unemployment would go out of hand unless a joint approach to facilitate youth uplift was initiated. They mutually agreed to have a Consultative Meet with Chief Ministers of neighbouring States  to formulate such common policies in the near future.


City scribe dies in Mumbai

Senior journalist Nand Kishor Gupta (46) breathed his last at the Mumbai airport around 3.10 pm today (9 June 2016) on his way back to Guwahati. A member of Guwahati Press Club, Gupta was suffering from gallbladder cancer and was referred to the Tata Memorial Hospital, Mumbai for his treatment. He left for Mumbai on June 3 last.

Gupta, who worked with various Hindi dailies including Hindi Sentinel, Pratah Khabar and Purvanchal Prahari, leaves behind his wife, a daughter, a minor son besides a host of relatives. Till the time of his death, Gupta was associated with Purvanchal Prahari as a senior sub editor.

Guwahati Press Club, which appealed for aids to Gupta’s treatment, expressed shock at the untimely demise of Gupta. The press club, while offering gratitude for everyone including Assam CMO who responded to its appeal, now urged the State chief minister Sarbananda Sonowal to kindly sanction an ex-gratia amount for the bereaved family.

Sahanur to be produced in court

The National Investigation Agency (NIA) will produce Sahanur Alom in court today a day after police arrested from Nalabari district on Friday night in connection with the Burdwan blast.

Sources told Assam Times that NIA will produce him before a special court in Guwahati later today seeking remand of the blast accused for 15 days. Alam was in a disguise when picked up during a joint operation by NIA and Police.

A special team of police and NIA has been interrogating him in Guwahati after he was rushed to the city. Two people were killed in the blast which took place in a house at Khagragarh in Bengal's Burdwan district on October 2.
