Jayanta Madhab passes away

Guwahati: Noted economist and thinker Dr Jayanta Madhab passed away after prolonged ailment in Guwahati on Monday. The end came in the wee hours where he was surrounded by his family members. His fans and relatives thronged his residence in Guwahati to pay him the last respect as soon as the news of his sad demise spread like wildfire.   

The renowned economist served as an advisor to CM Tarun Gogoi from 2003 to early 2009 and during this stint he advised the Congress government a slew of measures on economic and financial affairs before. 

Born on October 25, 1929, he held Ph.D from the London School of Economics and worked as director with the Asian Development Bank. After retirement he took the principal initiative to set up the North Eastern Development Finance Corporation (NEDFi).

He strongly advocated a new legislation to improve the financial situation in the state to improve funding and to counter recession and deficit.
