Initiatives of flood preparedness by distributing country boats in Majuli
In the time of world Covid-19 crisis, Assam is not exceptional, people of the state specially people from rural areas and flood prone areas affected by this pandemic most. Majuli the world’s largest river island depended on tourism facing economic hurdles due to the less number of tourist visits due to restrictions in response to Covid-19 pandemic.On the other hand, change in the climate has also affected the balance of life and ecosystem of the island. In response to these issues a civil society organization North East Affected Area Development Society (NEADS) putting an effort to strengthen resilience and sustainable adaptation to climate change in flood-affected areas in collaboration with a German base agency Terre Des Hommes (TDH). As a part of this initiative, the organization recently apprehended few distribution programmes such as flood resilient paddy seeds to 100 farmers, weaving raw materials to 30 women, 5 country boats (24 x 3 feet) in 5 villages and First Aid kits and Search & Rescue kits as preparedness before monsoon flood in the island.

The Bodo medium was introduced on 18th May 1963 in Assam. It was in 1976 the Bodo medium Students were lucky to appear for the Secondary Examination. A good number of students have passed out since then. Many intellectuals and people working in different fields have also studied in Bodo medium. There are about 20 lakhs Bodo population in Assam of which 4 lakh are students in Bodo medium studying in lower primary, upper primary and high schools in Bodo medium. There are only 27 Bodo medium provincialised high schools in Assam which do have sufficient teachers and no infrastructure for the students. In a bid to generate awareness on climate change young people from different parts of northeast came together to form Youth Alliance for Climate in 2008. It was a youth programme conducted by Indo Global Social Service Society as a part of their SMILE programme. The participants of that programme decided to form a network as the discussion of the youth programme was on climate change. YAC organises programme in different parts of North East. Most of the programmes are with the young people of the region which includes school students, college students and other young people.
