Symposium on hazards of electronic gadgets

Department of ECE, School of technology, Assam Don Bosco University, organised a day symposium on Advancements in Electronics and Communication Technology: Issues and Challenges 2014 (SAECT2014) on November 8. More than 100 students and faculty took part from various institutions of Guwahati. 

Prof. Ratnajit Bhattacharjee, Head, Dept. of EEE, IIT Guwahati spoke on “Potential biological and environmental impacts of EM radiation from wireless cellular telephone systems: An Overview”. He stated that EM waves and living cells interact with each other which may lead to health problems.

Discussing the topic “Cardiac information from ECG signal” Prof. Samarendra Dandapat, Dept. of EEE, IIT Guwahati, talked about the electric signals that carry information in our body and the generation of ECG signals by heart.

Dr. Kandarpa Kumar Sarma, Asst Prof, Dept. of ECT, Guwahati University, presented “Environment and Health Hazards of Electronics and Communication Technology: An Impending Challenge” giving importance to the developmental benefits in communication. 

Speaking on “E waste issues and challenges” Dr. Navajit Saikia, Asst Prof, Dept. of E&TE, Assam Engineering College mentioned that, globally 50 million tons of e-wastes are produced per year with an average growth rate of 8.8%, and that mobile phones’ waste will increase by 7% to 10 % by 2020. He urged the participants to help decrease e-waste.

Director of the School of Technology ADBU, Prof. Manoranjan Kalita facilitated a panel discussion on the symposium theme with Dr. Kandarpa Kumar Sarma of Guwahati University, Dr. Navajit Saikia of AEC , and  Dr. Sunandan Baruah, Convener, HOD, Dept. of ECE, ADBU.

In conclusion, Dr. Sunandan Baruah suggested creating a face book page dedicated to bring the awareness among the youth about the health and environmental hazards due to the use of electronic system.
