The darker the night, the brighter the morning. This can be well said in context of Assamese cinema. It is true that Assamese cinema is going through a very rough phase, perhaps the roughest in its history. But the recovery also seems to be a promising and glorious one, with a film of the most glamorous and talented cast and crew that Assamese film industry can boast of.
The film in question is Jeevan Baator Lagori, which is produced by Timothy Das Hanche under the banner of Hills Motion Pictures Association. The muhurat was carried out at the premise of Centre for Mass Communication and Journalism, Entrepreneurship Development Cell, Cotton College on February 12, 2009. The proceeding for the ceremony began at about 12:15pm. Anchored by Timothy Das Hanche, who is also the director of the film, the meeting started with the officials of the association felicitating mufflers the artists and technicians associated with the film with Karbi which includes actors like Nipan Goswami, Malaya Goswami, Atul Pachani, Dinesh Das, Indra Baniya, Hiranya Deka, Beauty Baruah, Debananda Saikia, Biki, Raag Ainitam, Ananya Pachani, Asha Bordoloi, Kapil Bora and Bengali actress Suchandra Chandra, music arranger Biman Baruah, cinematographer Sibanan Baruah, publicity designer Arunlochan Das among others. Later, journalists from various newspapers and TV channels were also felicitated with Karbi bags. Besides, various dignitaries of Assamese film industry including Munna Ahmed, Pabitra Margherita were also felicitated. Actors like Shyamantika Sharma and Arun Nath were absent from the day's schedule while actor Bishnu Khargharia joined the unit later.
Felicitation ceremony was followed by two short speeches by Nipan Goswami and Malaya Goswami respectively. Both the actor focused their speech on the current stagnant scenario of Assamese film industry and expressed their affirmation that the film Jeevan Baator Lagori will prove to be another milestone in the history of Assamese cinema. The inaugural lamp was lit by actors Dinesh Das and Atul Pachani as well as Dr. Satyen Kumar Chaudhury, Chief Project Coordinator, CMCJ, EDC, Cotton College. Coconut was broken by Indra Baniya while Malaya Goswami did malyarpan to the camera. Clap stick was given by Biman Baruah while Kapil Bora, Suchandra Chandra and Hiranya Deka gave the inaugural shot. Later, more shots were taken in the Cotton College premise. Next the unit moves to Diphu for a twenty five days schedule. It is to be noted that the film will be shot at Cinemascope at 35mm format.
Director Timothy Das Hanche elaborated that the film will be set in the rural and urban areas of Assam and it will show the journey of a young boy from his college days to his professional life as a businessman. Problems like unemployment and agricultural underproduction will come as sub-plots.
It is worth mentioning that Timothy Das Hanche was the scriptwriter for the film Pahari Kanya which was directed by Munin Baruah. His first directorial venture Ronga Modar, which was shot almost a decade ago, is slated to be released in March. Moreover, he was the producer of the controversial film Prem Pahare Bhaiyame.
