Traditional Bodo Game Amwl Dimwl Takes Centre Stage at Kokrajhar Youth Festival
KOKRAJHAR, October 15, 2026 — The traditional Bodo indigenous game Amwl Dimwl took centre stage on the second day of the Kokrajhar Youth Festival 2026 on Tuesday, highlighting the community’s rich cultural heritage and traditional sporting legacy.
The competition was inaugurated by Jubiraj Basumatary, MCLA of the 9 No. Bonorgaon constituency. The event was organised by the Bodoland Indigenous Games Association.
Interacting with the media, Basumatary stressed the importance of preserving, promoting and revitalising traditional indigenous games that have been integral to the cultural identity of the Bodo community for generations.
He said Amwl Dimwl was more than a game, describing it as a symbol of ancestral wisdom, cultural identity, age-old customs and collective heritage. Such traditional games reflect the lifestyle, values, skills and community spirit of previous generations while connecting young people with their cultural roots.
Basumatary observed that preserving indigenous games had become increasingly important as modern forms of entertainment and sports influenced the interests of younger generations. He said promoting these traditional practices would help ensure that the community’s cultural legacy continued to flourish.
He described the inclusion of Amwl Dimwl in the Kokrajhar Youth Festival as a meaningful initiative to safeguard this heritage and raise awareness among young people about traditional sporting practices.
According to him, such initiatives also strengthen intergenerational bonds by bringing traditional knowledge, cultural practices and community values into contemporary life. He said the celebration of Amwl Dimwl reflected a shared commitment to preserving Bodo cultural identity and inspiring future generations to carry forward their traditions.
