Illegal earth excavation alleged along Namti River in Nazira

NAZIRA, September 19, 2026 — In the aftermath of the devastating floods that battered Upper Assam, allegations of large-scale illegal earth excavation have surfaced in Nazira Co-District, with residents of Gahorisowabari raising concerns over the activities of an alleged land mafia network.

According to complaints submitted by local residents, large-scale excavation is being carried out on what they claim is government land along the banks of the Namti River in the Gahorisowabari area. Earth is reportedly being excavated using JCB machines and transported in trucks for commercial sale.

Residents fear that indiscriminate removal of soil from the riverbank could alter the natural course of the Namti River and increase the risk of flooding and riverbank erosion in the area.

The allegations have caused particular concern among residents of Gahorisowabari, many of whom suffered extensive losses in the recent floods, including damage to houses, agricultural land and livestock.

Locals allege that some influential individuals are carrying out the excavation openly during the daytime for financial gain. They further claim that the continued excavation has left deep and potentially dangerous pits along the riverbank, raising concerns over public safety.

The alleged excavation site is also located close to an area where a child reportedly drowned a few days ago after falling into a canal near the river. The incident had cast a pall of grief over the Namti area.

Despite the tragedy, residents allege that excavation resumed at the same location, with heavy machinery reportedly being used to dig deep pits and remove soil.

Following the complaints, local residents reportedly submitted a written representation to the administration seeking immediate intervention into the alleged excavation and transportation of earth.

Meanwhile, the Amguri Forest Department has inspected the alleged excavation site and initiated a higher-level inquiry into the matter.

Residents have expressed hope that the inquiry will establish the facts surrounding the alleged illegal excavation and commercial earth trade and that appropriate action will be taken against anyone found responsible.
