An alleged cattle theft in the Hatipoti Bogichapori area under Geleki Police Station in Nazira subdivision early Thursday morning led to the arrest of one person, while two others managed to escape.

According to reports, the incident occurred around 3 a.m. when a group of alleged cattle thieves reportedly stole a cow and a calf from a cattle shed at a residence in the area. The animals were allegedly being loaded into a Bolero bearing registration number AS-04-BC-8499, which had been parked on the main road leading towards Geleki.

Members of the Village Defence Party (VDP) reportedly noticed the suspicious activity and approached the vehicle. On seeing them, two of the alleged thieves fled, while another reportedly jumped into a nearby pond and hid beneath lotus leaves.

The VDP members immediately informed Geleki Police. A police team reached the spot and launched a search operation, subsequently apprehending the person allegedly hiding in the pond.

Police identified the arrested person as Manab Gogoi of Geleki. An operation is underway to trace and apprehend the two others who escaped.

The police later handed over the recovered cow and calf to their owner. The Bolero allegedly used in the incident was seized, and a case has been registered in connection with the alleged theft.
