BTC Deputy Speaker Bijit Gwra Narzary found hanging at Tamulpur residence

KOKRAJHAR, August 28, 2026 — Bodoland Territorial Council Legislative Assembly (BTCLA) Deputy Speaker Bijit Gwra Narzary was found hanging inside the bedroom of his residence at Kumarikata in Tamulpur district on Wednesday evening, with police investigating the circumstances surrounding his death.

Narzary was found at his residence at around 7.45 pm, according to police. Officials at Kumarikata Police Station said they received information about the incident at around that time and subsequently began an inquiry. Police have so far not officially established the circumstances or motive behind his death.

A senior police officer told The Times of India that the exact circumstances would become clearer after the post-mortem report. An autopsy was conducted at a government hospital in Baksa district on Thursday.

The development has raised questions over the circumstances surrounding the death, particularly as the police investigation is still at an early stage. Narzary's security personnel were reportedly present on the residential campus when the incident occurred, according to sources cited by The Times of India.

Local sources said Narzary had returned to his Kumarikata residence from Barama around three days before the incident. He reportedly spent Wednesday at his residence before his body was found in the evening. Reports that he had been suffering from health problems in recent months have also emerged, but there has been no official confirmation linking his health condition to his death.

Narzary represented the 26th Darrangajuli Council Constituency (ST) in the BTC and had been elected as an MCLA for four consecutive terms since 2011. He served as an Executive Member of the BTC for a brief period in 2019 and joined the BJP in 2020 during the UPPL-BJP-led BTC administration.

News of his sudden death prompted an outpouring of grief across the Bodoland Territorial Region. His mortal remains were brought to the BTC Secretariat at Bodofa Nwgwr in Kokrajhar on Thursday, where BTC Chief Executive Member Hagrama Mohilary and senior BTC officials paid floral tributes.

Mohilary described Narzary's death as an irreparable loss to the community and public life. He also said that an inquiry would be conducted into the circumstances that led to the incident and that the BTC leadership would discuss possible assistance to the bereaved family.

Deputy Chief Rihon Daimary, Principal Secretary Mukesh Ch Sahu, IGP, BTAD Bijoy Giri Kuliga, senior BTC officials, Executive Members, MCLAs, the President of the Bodo Sahitya Sabha and officials of the Kokrajhar district administration were among those who paid their last respects.

Former BTC chief and Rajya Sabha MP Pramod Boro, Assam Cabinet Minister Biswajit Daimary and former minister Urkhao Gwra Brahma were among those who expressed condolences over Narzary's death.

Narzary's funeral was later performed at his birthplace Chechapani near Kumarikata in Tamulpur after completion of the customary rituals.

Meanwhile, the BTC declared August 27 as a local holiday in Kokrajhar, Chirang, Baksa, Tamulpur and Udalguri districts as a mark of respect to the departed leader. The BTC also directed that the National Flag be flown at half-mast on August 27 and 28 at government offices, educational institutions and other designated places.

The holiday does not apply to schools, colleges, examination centres, students and staff engaged in examination-related duties, or personnel involved in Census-related work.

With the post-mortem report awaited and the inquiry continuing, the circumstances surrounding the death of the senior BTC legislator remain to be established.
