Body Found in Flood-Ravaged Nazira as Disease Fears Grow

NAZIRA, August 3, 2026 — Even two weeks after the devastating floods struck Nazira, the grim aftermath continues to unfold, with bodies still being discovered in flood-affected areas. On Monday, another body was spotted in the Nepali Khuti area of Nazira.

According to local residents, the body was found lodged among debris trapped in the upper section of a bamboo cluster in a remote part of Nepali Khuti. They immediately informed the administration. As of the time of filing this report, the body had not been recovered, although rescue teams were continuing their efforts. Thick silt deposits and widespread debris have made the recovery operation difficult. The identity of the deceased was yet to be established.

Meanwhile, concerns are mounting over post-flood health conditions in the region, with reports of fever and diarrhoea cases emerging from several affected areas.

According to local sources, two people have died after falling ill with fever and diarrhoea, although the exact medical causes of death have not been officially confirmed.

In Sundarpukhuri, 39-year-old Nitumoni Gogoi reportedly developed a fever two days after floodwaters entered her home. She was undergoing treatment at Ligiripukhuri Hospital, but her condition reportedly deteriorated after she experienced breathing difficulties late on Sunday night. She died while being shifted to Sivasagar for advanced treatment, according to local sources.

In another incident, Bhagya Gogoi of Holongkhatoni reportedly died after suffering from fever and diarrhoea. During the devastating flood on July 19, he had remained trapped inside his house for nearly 12 hours before being rescued by personnel of the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF). According to family members and local residents, he developed a fever two days later and his condition worsened after diarrhoea symptoms appeared on Sunday night. He was being taken to Sivasagar Civil Hospital when he died on the way.

Relief Efforts Under Scrutiny

As flood-affected residents across Nazira continue to wait for adequate assistance, relief distribution has come under increasing scrutiny. While government agencies, voluntary organisations and individuals have been extending support, many residents allege that government relief has yet to reach all affected households.

Opposition MLA Akhil Gogoi recently alleged that the government was distributing substandard relief materials and providing only ₹15,000 as compensation, which he described as inadequate.

Responding to criticism during a recent visit to Nazira, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said that "those with a narrow mindset fail to understand our efforts" and asserted that the government would continue to stand by the people of Nazira during the recovery process.

Adding to the controversy, some residents, speaking on condition of anonymity, alleged irregularities in relief distribution and claimed that certain ward commissioners were involved in the mismanagement of government relief materials.

As recovery efforts continue, many flood-affected families remain engaged in cleaning their homes and rebuilding their lives, even as concerns grow over public health, relief distribution and the long road to rehabilitation.
