Role of AASU in Assam

The All Assam Student’s Union (AASU) is a mouthpiece of the people of Assam. Since its inception the AASU has been fighting for the cause of Assam and making its presence felt politically in the entire nation. After the anti foreigner’s movement in Assam which was triggered off by infiltration of Bangladeshis from the border areas, a fear psychosis among the Assamese of losing their identities and cultural bondings led to the formation of AASU. The students of Assam united to form the AASU and lead the people of Assam in their struggle for protecting their identity. It resulted in the signing of the Assam accord. Though the AASU has undergone many splits and various other student organizations like Tai Ahom Students Union, All Bodo Student’s Union (ABSU) have come into existence, the AASU is still following the chosen path of being with the people of Assam and respecting the peoples’ democratic ideals. Though now its role has become even more manifolds with Assam facing newer challenges but the AASU still holds a beacon to the Assamese community during thick and thin high and low.

The AASU raises its voice every time it feels Assam is threatened by external or internal factors. Whether it is urging the central government to implement the Assam Accord, evict illegal Bangladeshis to save Assam or to protest for any injustice to its people, the AASU is the voice of Assam. It has also taken upon itself to uphold the Assamese culture and tradition and is working with the state and central government to maintain peace and unity in the state.

However it should be more vocal regarding the mayhem unfolded by extremists groups which has resulted in the loss of life of many innocent Assamese as well as Hindi speaking people. Instead of calling for bandhs to protest against issues it can resort to protest marches, dharnas etc for then people take notice of the cause behind the protests whereas bandhs not only effect the daily wage earners it also fails to register itself in the minds of the people as it becomes just another holiday for them. Bandhs also affect the state’s economy and slows down the development process of the state.

Moreover, women representation in AASU is quite negligible therefore it should take measures to ensure equal representation of female members by encouraging them.

The AASU being a student’s body has an important role to play in the lives of the student community therefore it should lead by example. It has done commendable work by recently felicitating meritorious student and therefore inspired them to achieve nobler goals.

The people of Assam have found a mouthpiece in the AASU and the future of Assam depends on these students who would carry forward the heritage of Assam by righteous means.

Well written.. The representation of lady is not so law in AASU..In different committe at district level or ancholik or branch level, there are various girl representatives. But yes in central body no girl representation is now. Moreover any student without relating any political party can be a part of AASU. We too thanx AASU as atleast for this organisation something can hope for the benefit of Assam. Even already various good and comandable works done by our loving this org, ie, AASU. Thank u to AASU too.

Assam: Thumbs up for Pranab Mukherje

Assam gives raw deal to PA Sangma in the recent Presidential polls. Pranab Mukherjee gets overwhelming support from the state. Mukherjee got 110 votes in the 126-member Assembly. Sangma got 13 votes only. Two votes were invalid while one did not cast his vote. In terms of vote value, Mukherjee got 12,760 while Sangma got 1,508. The boxes were flown to Delhi on Friday and the results were announced on Sunday.

Kokrajhar violence spreads to Chirang

Simmering violence in Kokrajhar is spreading beyond the district to the neighbouring Chirang on Sunday. Two persons shot dead in a fresh orgy of violence. The shoot out took place at 7-30 in the afternoon. Unidentified miscreants fired at Mongolian Bazaar in Bijni town of Chirang this evening killing two persons. A vehicle was also set ablaze in the district. Top ranked police officials rushed to the spot and additional security forces are arriving in the town to rein in the situation.

Kokrajhar clash toll goes up to 15

The death toll in Kokrajhar rose to 15 on Sunday. Three more bodies, including of a woman and her child, were recovered from the banks of river Gouranga while another body was recovered from Kathalbari area. Night curfew was reimposed from the evening on Sunday with Section 144 CrPC in force in the entire district till further orders. The violence also spread to neighbouring Chirang district where a vehicle was burnt. Strict vigil was kept in sensitive pockets and already six additional companies deployed with three more on way. The district and police administration of the neighbouring districts have also been asked to be vigilant.

Kokrajhar: DIG injured in mob attack

Violence in Kokrajhar and its adjoining areas escalated on Sunday. The death toll has also mounted to 15 in the trouble-torn district. A senior police official and three others have been injured at a mob attack on police convoy.The attack on the senior police official took place when DIG S Kumar and Kokrajhar Additional Superintendent of Police Amar Choudhury were on a stock taking visit to Fakiragram area. An irate mob blocked the convoy demanding release of 10 people held in connection with the killing of four former BLT cadres. Life skills education programme

To promote the importance of life skills and how youth can cope up with different problems a life skills education programme was held from 2-17 July at Dispur. The programme was organised by Organisation for Leadership Development. Students of class x and IX from Kishalaya Vidyapith, took part in the programme. Statewide AASU protest for Pritam

AASU activists across the state blocked roads and burnt effigies of Railway Minister Mukul Roy on Saturday in protest against the Bihar government’s inaction to ensure justice for Pritam Bhattacharjee’s family membersHundreds of AASU activists organised demonstrations in all districts demanding CBI probe into the incident. AASU has also demanded safety of rail passengers going through Bihar. They further accused the Assam government of turning a blind eye to the issue. The body was found in a badly mutilated condition on June 16 from the railway track under Kataria over bridge, 12 km from Naugachia station in Bihar.

Jairam for balanced media reporting

Union Rural Development Minister Jairam Ramesh has called upon media to act in a more balanced manner to deliver its promises. Inaugurating a Tata Consultancy Services centre in Guwahati on Saturday, he said that in negative reporting, a journalist should take into his consideration all angles which, he said, is a great responsibility. His observation assumes significance following the recent GS Road molestation episode where a journalist was arrested and an editor in chief with a TV channel wa forced to resign.

3-day police remand for Gaurav

Police on Saturday got remand of Gauravjyoti Neog for three days a day after the TV journalist was arrested in the GS Road molestation case. Neog, who filmed the entire shocking incident and was accused of masterminding it, was produced before the Kamrup Chief judicial magistrate on Saturday where police sought him their remand for five days. But the magistrate allowed police to take him in their remand for 3 days.On Monday he would be produced again before the court.

Gogoi stresses vocation training for student

Assam Chief Minister on Saturday said that vocational and skill-based training should form a compulsory part of the school curriculum. Launching a joint initiative by global education and media major Pearson and the state government to provide vocational training to school students under the proposed National Vocational Education Qualification Framework (NVEQF) in Guwahati, he said that all students should undergo minimum training in skill-based courses. He appealed to the youths to give up disruptive politics and bandh culture and instead focus on work to increase the production forces.
