Role of AASU in Assam

The All Assam Student’s Union (AASU) is a mouthpiece of the people of Assam. Since its inception the AASU has been fighting for the cause of Assam and making its presence felt politically in the entire nation. After the anti foreigner’s movement in Assam which was triggered off by infiltration of Bangladeshis from the border areas, a fear psychosis among the Assamese of losing their identities and cultural bondings led to the formation of AASU. The students of Assam united to form the AASU and lead the people of Assam in their struggle for protecting their identity. It resulted in the signing of the Assam accord. Though the AASU has undergone many splits and various other student organizations like Tai Ahom Students Union, All Bodo Student’s Union (ABSU) have come into existence, the AASU is still following the chosen path of being with the people of Assam and respecting the peoples’ democratic ideals. Though now its role has become even more manifolds with Assam facing newer challenges but the AASU still holds a beacon to the Assamese community during thick and thin high and low.

The AASU raises its voice every time it feels Assam is threatened by external or internal factors. Whether it is urging the central government to implement the Assam Accord, evict illegal Bangladeshis to save Assam or to protest for any injustice to its people, the AASU is the voice of Assam. It has also taken upon itself to uphold the Assamese culture and tradition and is working with the state and central government to maintain peace and unity in the state.

However it should be more vocal regarding the mayhem unfolded by extremists groups which has resulted in the loss of life of many innocent Assamese as well as Hindi speaking people. Instead of calling for bandhs to protest against issues it can resort to protest marches, dharnas etc for then people take notice of the cause behind the protests whereas bandhs not only effect the daily wage earners it also fails to register itself in the minds of the people as it becomes just another holiday for them. Bandhs also affect the state’s economy and slows down the development process of the state.

Moreover, women representation in AASU is quite negligible therefore it should take measures to ensure equal representation of female members by encouraging them.

The AASU being a student’s body has an important role to play in the lives of the student community therefore it should lead by example. It has done commendable work by recently felicitating meritorious student and therefore inspired them to achieve nobler goals.

The people of Assam have found a mouthpiece in the AASU and the future of Assam depends on these students who would carry forward the heritage of Assam by righteous means.

Well written.. The representation of lady is not so law in AASU..In different committe at district level or ancholik or branch level, there are various girl representatives. But yes in central body no girl representation is now. Moreover any student without relating any political party can be a part of AASU. We too thanx AASU as atleast for this organisation something can hope for the benefit of Assam. Even already various good and comandable works done by our loving this org, ie, AASU. Thank u to AASU too.

Blast at Bhangagarh: 3 died and several injured

Three persons died and several others have been injured when a powerful bomb exploded at Bhagagarh area in the city on Thursday. According to information, the blast took place at road to the GMCH at around 5-40 in the evening. The injured persons have been rushed to the Guwahati Medical College Hospital. The blast took place two and a fifteen minutes after the blast at Bhotnath area where equal number of persons were injured. Police say it a handiwork of ULFA.

That too minutes before the arrival of the Union home minister arrived in Guwahati. According to information, the blast took place at the vegetable market. The bomb was plnted at a bicycle which exploded at round 5-30. The injured persons have been rushed to the Guwahati Medical College Hospital. Five of these persons have been seriously inured.The blast took place two and a half hours after the blast at Birubari area where one person was injured.

Chidambaram to visit Assam on Friday

Union Home Minister P Chidambaram is arriving in Guwahati on Friday to review the security situation in the state in the wake many terror attacks.According to information, Chidambaram would meet Chief Minister Tarun Gagoi and unified Command to discuss the security situation. Hi visit is significant as the term for ceasefire with the National Democratic Front of Bodoland (NDFB) expired on Wednesday.The Union minister is schedule to discuss extending Suspension of Operation when its hand behind the Assam blasts were suspected along with insurgent elements based in Bangladesh, he said the CBI took up investigation only on December 18 and no concrete evidence has been gathered about those...

NDFB expels Ranjan Daimary

Amid a widening crack within the National Democratic Front of Bodoland, the Bodo rebel outfit announced that their general council has sacked Ranjan Damry alias D R Nabla from the outfit.In a statement on Thursday, they said they were not satisfied with the recent statement of Daimary where he announced that he was still at the helm of affairs.NDFB president B Sungthagra said they are committed to peace process and that they will carry forward the process.

Blast in the city: 1 injured in Birubari

One person was injured when a minor blast took place in the city's Birubari area in the afternoon on Thursday. According to information, the bomb was planted inside a dustbin which exploded at around 2-45 in the afternoon.The injured person was waiting near the dustbin. Top ranked police officials rushed to the spot and investigation is on. The injury is said to be a minor one. Police say it an IED and that it's a handiwork of ULFA to terrorise the people on the new year's day.

Ceasefire extension with NDFB under consideration: Gogoi

Assam Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi says the Centre is considering the extension of ceasefire with NDFB as the term expired on December 31. Talking to reporters on Thursday on the new year’s day the chief minister also unveiled a slew of schemes to uplift the state’s socio-economic and cultural front.Congratulating Bangladesh’s newly elected President Sheikh Hasina, the Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi welcomed the change of guards in Dhaka as high expectations have been attached with the new regime’s prompt declaration of uprooting insurgent groups from its soil.

Army busts KLNLF Gen HQ in Karbi Anglong

Army claims a major acheiecvement when it's Red Horn Division busted the KLNLF general headquarters at Laklangso in Karbi Anglong distirct on Thursday wee hours.According to information, acting on a tip off army conducted a raid at the General Headquarters of the rebel outfit, busted it after arresting a dreaded rebel. Besides, a huge cache of arms and ammunition have been seized from the camp. These include an AK-47 rifle, 51mm morter, four mines and 300 detonators and some cortex wires.
