Young activists honoured

Young writer and social activist Syed Miraz Ahmed, was honored the Rotary Young Achiever Award 2013 on Saturday for his work on environment and sustainability activisim. Miraz is pioneering the use of technology and media to promote Citizen Journalism & New Media in North East India.

With an overarching focus on environment and climate change awareness primarily among the youth he involved in a strategic, constructive pilot affiliate intervention programme with Nokia India and the Television for the Environment, in bridgeing the informational gaps that exist in the urban climes among school, college and university students under the programme ‘Community Screenings for Environment Awareness’. Miraz has been associated with several free media groups and developmnet  and Human Rights Organisation while working towards North East independent media movement.

The award ceremony at ITA Centre, Guwahati celebrated the spirit of the New Generation, as its core theme. This Rotary International’s initiative had thirty participating youth sharing their vision on ‘Youth Speak: How I want my India to be in 2025.’The session was judged by Dhruba Jyoti Hazarika, Secy, Tourism and Dr. Tondra Borbora, Lecturer. Present in the programme as Chief Guest was the General Manager of the State Bank of India (Local Head Office), Mahendra Aditya Sahu.

To inspire the youth with their experiences were the Tarun Saikia-Manish Deka duo (who scaled the Mount Everest), Rituraj Phukan (General Secretary, Nature's Green Guard who visited the Antartica to gain firsthand knowledge of the vagaries of Climate Change) and the brigade of Young Achievers representing various fields who were awarded for their contribution to the society through their vocations. They are: Debashish Dutta (Ace Chess Player), Queen Hazarika (Singer, Actor), Mayank Taparia (Ideator, Education Specialist, Social Activist), Mallika Buragohain (Fashion Photographer), Ranjan Engti (Pop Artist, Ideator, Social Activist), Dulu Bora (Enviromental Conservationist), DJ Pulse (Music-maker, Instructor), Kamal. K.Kakati (High-fashion Journalist based in Mumbai), Rupam Bhuyan (Lead Vocalist) and Dilip Sarmah (Sculptor, Garden Architect). The event also featured several rounds of cultural extravaganza on the theme: Empowering the New Generation that enthralled the audience present.

The much-hyped efforts for preservation of ancient monuments seems to have failed to reach a section of people. A section of these must-see monuments is languishing in dying agony. That too in the heart of Guwahati city. The example may be made of the Ugratara temple and the Jorpukhuri beside it. The things have reached such a paralyzing extent that a circle of conscious citizens in Guwahati has to write to the district authorities for intervention. Here is an excerpt of a letter written to Deputy Commissioner by Dr Satyakam Phukan demanding immediate intervention to preserve the age old temple and twin tanks teeming with turtles.

Information Forum, umbrella organization of RTI activists of Assam, staged protest in front of the Morigaon district Deputy Commissioner office on Saturday, demanding arrest of the killer of Atikur Rahman, an RTI activist of Lahorighat locality of Morgaon district. Rahman’s body with injure marks on head was recovered on January 15 in a remote road side area of Lahorighat. His family alleged that some influential people were behind his murder as he continued fight against corruption of local PRI system. The was stated in a press release.          
A five-day event “Festival of Tibetan Art and Culture” will be held at the Kalakshetra Guwahati from February 2-6, 2014. His Holiness the Dalai Lama will be present on the occasion. Pongyong Tekchai, a collection of articles, written by noted  writer Rajiv Ahmed and published by Sampriti Prakashan, was released on Mondy at a  function organised in Guwahati Press club. The book was inaugurated by senior journalist Hyder Hussain and the meeting was presided over by veteran journalist Dhirendranath Chakarvorty. Inagurating the book journalist Hussain hoped that the book will able to feed up the needs of voracious readers’ community of Assamese language.
