Cotton College Second Mess completes 100 years

 The historic ‘Second Mess’, later named as ‘Swahid Ranjit Borpujari (SRB) Boys’ Hostel’ of the Cotton College is going to celebrate its 100th year. The hostel was established in 1913 was the second men’s hostel of the college.

The Steering Committee formed to organize the function announced to hold the two day long centenary celebration on December 28-29 at the hostel campus.

Under the chief patrons- Debananda Konwar, the Governor of Tripura and speaker of Assam assembly Pranab Gogoi, the college authority, alumni and present borders of the SRB hostel have formed the steering committee recently. Already a Facebook account is working to assemble the ex-borders of the hostel and to unite under one roof once again.

The celebration of the hostel is also going to focus on the various issues like revamping the hostel structure and other possibilities to restore the heritage of the historic infrastructure. The hostel, currently abandoned due to its ill maintained infrastructure, is shifted to the first block of the Third Mess or ‘Anandaram Baruah boys’ hostel’.

The steering committee is going to start the proceeding for the ensuing event from June 23via a function at the Sudmarson hall of the college. The committee has also opened an SBI bank account under the name SRB HOSTEL 2ND MESS CENTENARY CELEBRATION 2013. Ex-borders, both working and retired, were requested to register their names and contribute Rs 2000 and Rs 1500 for the event at the account number -33034437673. Present borders have been prayed to contribute Rs 500 for the same.

Assam Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi on Wednesday met Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh at his Office in New Delhi and discussed with him to spruce up internal security mechanism including raising a new battalion for Assam.Gogoi also discussed with him the status of ceasefire agreement that the government has with different militant groups along with devising rehabilitation package for the surrendered militants. Moreover, Chief Minister Gogoi discussed with him the prevailing law and order of the state including other pending issues and requested the Home Minister to look into the matters for doing needful from the Centre. Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi said that the state government would bear all educational expenses for the students belonging to BPL families under a new scheme to be launched soon.
