Speed Inceptors in Guwahati streets

In 365 days 246 people have been killed either by speeding bikes or vehicles on the streets of Guwahati leave alone the rest of the state in 2012. And the terrible trend is that the number is increasing day by day. But the pedestrians can leave a sigh of relief as the city police have equipped themselves with Speed Inceptors to nab the motorists who have been creating havoc in the city streets.

The four German technology vehicles with modern facilities will be roaming in the streets of the city with the immediate effect. Addressing a press conference Assam Police IGP (central western range) L R Bishnoi said that this modern technology equipped vehicle will help in reducing road accidents in the city and elsewhere.

“The traffic interceptors are basically traffic enforcement and education vehicles. These contain Speed Laser Camera, Breath Alcohol Analyzer, Top Surveillance Camera, Roof mounted Flip Down Monitor, Top Bar light cum siren, UPS and additional batteries. The speed Laser Camera is capable of capturing a clear number plate of speeding vehicles above the set speed limit from 300 metres onwards. The offenders are either stopped at the enforcement point or made to pay spot fine,” Bishnoi said.

The cameras which are installed in the vehicles have 450X zoom that can capture the number plate of a speeding vehicle from a distance up to 250 metrein all kind of weathers in day time and up to 120 metres during the night hours. In addition to collection spot fines, a data bank of such offenders will be stored in data base.

“Besides, the top surveillance camera can pick out one way violation, dangerous driving, lane changing without signal, wrong parking and other violation of the traffic norms,” he added.

The state police have trained up 44 personnel to take up the job who will be on duty round the clock in four zones of the city. The other states who have already used this technology seen a drastic change in decreasing the accident rate.  In the process Assam has become the first state in the northeastern region to install this facility.

It can also be mentioned that the traffic department has collected Rs 3 crore in 2012 from fines collected from the traffic rule violators inside the city only. As per the government records, there are around 15 lakh vehicles plying in the state and out of these 4 lakhs are in Guwahati.
