Final push for Mt. Everest Summit

The 1st North East Indian Mt. Everest expedition has set off for the final summit for the Mt. Everest from the Everest Base camp. Altogether, 22 climbers from the North Eastern States are participating in the exhibition. The Programme is sponsored by the North Eastern Council and the Manipur Government for Rs. 300 lakh. A programme in this connection was flagged off by the President of India on February 25last.

It may be mentioned that this is the first time that a team consisting entirely of a North Eastern Climbers are attempting to climb the Mount Everest. It is being implemented by Manipur Mountaineering and Trekking Association (MMTA). Dr. L. Surjit, President, MMTA is leading the expedition.

A team of 11 climbers has reached Camp-III on 15th May, 2013 which is located at 7320 metres (24000 ft) approx. The 11 climbers of the team to have reached Camp-III are N. Chingkheinganba (Manipur), Kazi Sherpa  (Sikkim), Ansu Jamsenpa (Arunachal Pradesh), A. Robert (Manipur), N. Bidyapati (Manipur), Wansuk  Myrthong (Meghaylaya), Nima Lama (Arunachal Pradesh), Manish  Kumar Deka (Assam), Tarun Saikia (Assam), Anand Gurung (Sikkim) and David Zohmang (Mizoram).

The team is expected to make the final summit on today depending on the weather. Mr. Puyamcha Mohon will make an attempt to summit on May 19 next. Further, depending on the permission from the Nepalese authority, few of the expedition team members will be making an attempt for second summit.

During the acclimatization, the expedition team had reached Camp-III on April 30 last after which they returned and went with the final push for the summit.

Assam Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi on Wednesday met Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh at his Office in New Delhi and discussed with him to spruce up internal security mechanism including raising a new battalion for Assam.Gogoi also discussed with him the status of ceasefire agreement that the government has with different militant groups along with devising rehabilitation package for the surrendered militants. Moreover, Chief Minister Gogoi discussed with him the prevailing law and order of the state including other pending issues and requested the Home Minister to look into the matters for doing needful from the Centre. Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi said that the state government would bear all educational expenses for the students belonging to BPL families under a new scheme to be launched soon.
