ULFA vs Zubeen

The United Liberation Front of Asom has strongly criticized Zubeen Garg for performing in Hindi at the Latasheel function.
In a statement released to media on Thursday, the outfit alleged that the artist has downplayed the appeal.

The Paresh Baruah faction of ULFA has warned Assam singers from singing Hindi songs in the upcoming Rongali Bihu functions and the organisers to desist from holding dances set to Bollywood songs.

The Asam Agitation which started in 1979 and ended with The Assam Accord in 1985, is a major timeline of history of Assam. The Assam Accord, which sought to end a six-year-long agitation against illegal immigrants in Assam, was signed between members of the All Assam Students Union (AASU), and state and central governments just a few hours before Rajiv Gandhi was to deliver the Independence Day address in 1985. Immediately afterwards, the student leaders were catapulted from their hostel rooms into the corridors of power. Their party, the Asom Gana Parishad (AGP), was voted to power the same year, with Prafulla Kumar Mahanta becoming the youngest ever chief minister of an Indian state...

Within less than two months of returning to power, the National Democratic Alliance (NDA-III) Government has revived its 2018 proposal to curtail the autonomy of the Information Commissions established under The Right to Information Act, 2005 (RTI Act). Readers will remember, a similar attempt was made exactly one year ago but the Bill to assume power to regulate the tenure, salaries and allowances of Information Commissioners across the country was not tabled in Parliament. Perhaps the widespread protest from citizenry and the media supported by the Opposition Parties was the reason for the government backtracking. Emboldened by the big majority that it has attained in the 17th...

Guwahati: Journalists’ Forum Assam (JFA), while expressing surprise over a media report narrating the ‘directive’ of Directorate of Advertising and Visual Publicity (DAVP) for not issuing advertisement to The Assam Tribune since February last because of ‘its anti-citizenship amendment bill stand’, urges the Union government in New Delhi to clarify its position. “It is unfortunate that a pioneer newspaper of northeast India has been subjected to such unwanted situation even though The Assam Tribune has played practically a neutral role while reporting the CAB issues since last year,” said a statement issued by JFA president Rupam Barua and secretary Nava Thakuria. Vana Mahotsav was started in India in 1950. Keeping in mind the shared inter linkages between forestry and agriculture, the then Union Minister of Agriculture KM Munshi, embarked upon this idea to create awareness on conservation of forests and plantation of trees among masses of this largely agricultural country. However, in recent times the underlying objective behind celebration of this weeklong festival seemed to have lost its relevance. Without proper conservation of forests, simply growing trees cannot be a substitute for altering shared habitats. Forests perform critical ecological functions. In cities they are important green spaces supporting a variety of life including birds and...
Elephant was declared the National Heritage Animal in the year 2010, but the condition of elephants -- both wild and captive is miserable. In Assam alone, wild elephants continue to die from poaching, poisoning, electrocution, in trenches of tea gardens and industrial structures, and a mounting number of fatalities on railway tracks. On the other hand, smuggling of captive elephants has taken the form of an industry in the state. The Tinsukia district has become ill-famous for illegal-elephant trade. A racket involved in the capture of sub adult or juvenile elephants for the sole purpose of smuggling has become so strong that they brazenly advertise their “business” under the very nose of...
