Gurgaon celebrates Rongali Bihu 2013

The day April 13, 2013 was a day with a difference. The people hailing from Assam and well-wishers of Assam from the Millennium city of Gurgaon as well as NCR of Delhi opted for this day to celebrate ‘Rongali Bihu 2013’ ushering the spring season. About a 2000 strong crowd thronged DLF Phase-I Community Centre in Gurgaon from all over Delhi & NCR in the evening and celebrated the most cherished festival of Assam. The event started with an art & painting competition for the kids from 11AM, which succeeded with the Rs. 30,000/- Prize money Bihuwoti Competition. A total of 14 participants from Delhi & NCR participated in the Bihuwoti Competition, judged by Bihuwa Prabhat Baruah of Assam Bhawan, Sanghamitra Borgohain, a former Bihu Rani of Lotasil Bihutoli and Sikha Mahanta, a former Bihuwoti. The first prize of the Bihuwoti Competition of Rs. 15,000/- in memory of Late Khireswar Kakoty, sponsored by Ashalata Bhuyan went to Irani Sonowal of North Campus. The second prize of the Bihuwoti Competition of Rs. 10,000/- in memory of Late Nivedita Kathkatia & Bogi Ram Kathkatia, sponsored by Moushumee Jha went to Sampriti Mahanta and the third prize of the Bihuwoti Competition of Rs. 5,000/- in memory of Late Guru Prasad Sharma, sponsored by Tridip Sharma went to Nabamallika Bhagawati of North Campus.

The Cultural evening started at 7 PM with a Hunsori by Hunsori team led by Utpal Kirara from Delhi. The Hunsori was followed by Chorus by the Ladies of Assam Association Gurgaon, namely, Ashalata Bhuyan, Rajashree Kashyap, Mimun Das, Mala Sharma, Karavi Sharma, Purnima Baruah, Reena    Sharma, Riju Sharma, Kongkona Mahanta, Sakuntala Devi, Nandita Sharma, Karabi Rajkhowa Bhuyan and directed by Debojit Das, Cultural Secretary, AAG. The lighting of lamp inaugurating the cultural evening was carried out by the invited guests of the evening, namely Chief Guest of the Evening, Nripendra Kumar Bharali, Director (HR & BD), Oil India Limited, Esteemed Guests of the evening, Debojit Thousan, Chief Executive Member, Dima Hasao Autonomous Development Council, Haflong, T P Khaund, Principal Adviser, Govt. of Mizoram, Mrigank Bhowmik of Invest-Care and Bhagya Kalita, assisted by Mridul Bhuyan President, AAG, Mukul Gogoi, General Secretary, AAG, Siddhanta M Kashyap, Asstt. General Secretary, AAG. After felicitation of the Guests by ‘Phulam Gamosa’, the invited guests inaugurated the souvenir ‘Samannay’ of Assam Association Gurgaon, edited by Kaushik Sarma.The event was followed by an exotic bihu dance of a Bihuwoti Participant Babita Phukan.

Dipakshi Kalita from North Campus enthralled the audience with a couple of Bihu songs. Then, the first prize of Bihuwoti competition winner Irani Sonowal danced bihu to the tunes of the Bihu Team. The evening turned melodious with guest artist duo renowned assamese singers Mayukh Hazarika and his wife Laili Dutta Hazarika taking over the show and entertained the audience for about 45 minutes with their melodious songs. Succeeding this, Bidisha Sharma, the danseur from Gurgaon enthralled the audience with her dancing genre in the famous song ‘Poka dhanor maje maje xoru xoru aali’ of Late Luit Konwar Rudra Baruah. The highlight of the cultural evening was a theme show on ‘Eight Decades of Assamese Films’, directed by Arunav Gogoi, in which more than 50 childrens, ladies and gents participated. Even participants included participants from areas as far flung as Greater Noida, Janakpuri and Rohini and ex-Gurgaonites shifting to Mumbai & Jaipur, who participated in the theme show, which depicted the journey of Assamese Films from 1935 till date.

As soon as the programme was over, Gurgaonites saw a glimpse of ‘Bordoisila’ returning to her abode in the form of a sudden shower, but that could not deter the viewers from participating in the Mukoli Bihu, which took place inside the community hall due to the rain. The event management was conducted by Sauvik Sharma, Secretary (Event Management), AAG. The evening concluded with a typical assamese sumptuous feast with delicacies like Rice, Dal, ‘Khasi Mangso’, ‘Masor Tenga’, ‘Bengenar Bor’, Mixed Vegetables, ‘Bilahir Tak’ and ‘Payas’. The day will be remembered by Gurgaonites for a long time to come.
