Anti-tobacco bill soon

Health minister Dr Himanta Biswa Sarma is hopeful that the bill to ban tobacco is on the cards. Dr Sarma informed the Assam assembly on Wednesday that the bill would be moved after cabinet approval.

the govt should inform all the trade bodies what products are banned or what not banned to save the petty traders from the meaningless harassment from the govt officers and so called many organisations. the sale of smoking items should also be banned in the state.

Suspected ULFA militants exploded an oil pipeline in Tinsukia district on Tuesday.The explosion took place at 10 in the morning at Anandbag area in Digboi resulting in a huge inferno in the entire area. Security forces are arriving in the spot. Details are awited. 
Security forces claimed to have killed a hardcore ULFA militant following a heavy exchange of firing in Goalpara district on Tuesday.The encounter took place in early in the morning at Khardang near Dudhnoi bordering Meghalaya where the ULFA militant was killed to be later identified as Niyar Asom. Campaigning for the first phase of panchayat polls ends. Polls will tae place Wednesday. The first phase will decide the fate of altogether 28,680 candidates in eight districts. Of them, 643 candidates will contest for the post of Zilla Parishad member, 2,801 for Anchalik Panchayat member, 3,099 candidates for Gaon Panchayat president's post and 22,137 candidates filed their nominations for Gaon Panchayat membership. First phase will include Tinsukia, Dibrugarh, Jorhat, Sivasagar, Golaghat, Kaliabor, Nagaon Sadar, Lakhimpur and Dhemaji districts. The counting of votes would take place on February 14 and February 15.

The Assam government has set up a group of ministers to look into the issue of inclusion of erosion as an eligible calamity for relief under National Disaster Response Fund (NDRF) or State Disaster Response Fund (SDRF).Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi conveyed to Union Minister of Agriculture & Food Processing Industries Sharad Pawar recently.Gogoi wrote a letter to Pawar requesting him to include river bank erosion in the list of eligible natural calamities for assistance from NDRF/SDRF.The GOM is being serviced by Ministry of Home Affairs.

Properties worth Rs 1 crore has been reduced to ashes when a major fire broke out in Nalbari town on Monday. The fire broke out at a garment shop because of an electric short circuit in the wee hours which later engulfed the adjacent shops. The local businessman injured in the shocking shoot out in Dhubri is battling for life on Monday. Police have yet to nab the miscreants involved in the incident that rocked the district hours after the post Republic Day.
