Subject: Inclusion of life and works of Srimanta Sankaradeva in NCERT curriculum
Respected Sir,
Many leading persons as well as organizations of Assam have been consistently demanding the inclusion of life and works of the great saint, social reformer, litterateur and cultural maestro Srimanta Sankaradeva (1449-1568) in the NCERT curriculum. The matter was raised in Parliament also in 2006. It was in response to such demands that NCERT included one paragraph about Srimanta Sankaradeva in the history textbook for class XI. (Themes in Indian History, Part II, First edition, 2007, page 165) But since History is an optional subject, only a limited few students of the Arts stream get to know about Srimanta Sankaradeva. This has not helped much in making the medieval social reformer known among the students and thereby among the general people of India.
Srimanta Sankaradeva was the first playwright in all modern Indian languages. He introduced drop-scenes for the first time in world. He created the classical Sattriya dance form. He created a new school of classical music with his own Ragas. He was an architect, a choreographer, a social reformer who redeemed his people from regressive medieval customs. He integrated people of all castes, all tribes. It is in the fitness of the things that life and works of such a genius should be taught to the pupils in all levels. So Society for Srimanta Sankaradeva makes an appeal to NCERT to make necessary corrections in the curriculum and include chapters on the great saint, social reformer, litterateur and cultural maestro Srimanta Sankaradeva in textbooks for all classes. We will be glad to assist NCERT in the revision of curriculum, when it is done.

Tinsukia, March 22: Suspected militants of the banned outfit United Liberation Front of Asom (Independent) (ULFA-I) launched a pre-dawn attack on an Assam Police commando camp in the Jagun area of Tinsukia district, leaving at least four security personnel injured.
According to reports, the militants attacked the camp around 2 a.m., allegedly lobbing several grenades and opening fire with automatic weapons. Guwahati, Feb 28: The Assam government’s decision to seek a 5 per cent stake in Oil India Limited (OIL) has triggered discussion on the State’s long-term approach to the oil and gas sector in the Northeast.
